Every year a different country plays host of the party; this year is Mexico.

The carbon emissions saved under the plan could equal a 30-percent reduction in auto emissions in the United States, say estimates. The plan, which requires automakers to improve fuel-efficiency by the year 2016, is one that 10 automakers have signed onto - even Ford, which reportedly got cold feet at the last moment.

For American car buyers, though, the landmark agreement will mean an average $1,300 increase in the price of a new car by 2016. And to a car-buying public that hasn’t yet latched onto the idea of a hybrid vehicle, that price increase might be a tough one to swallow.

Colossal ships that seem to defy the laws of physics by floating on water contain a lot - A LOT - of potentially bad environmental materials if dealt with in the wrong way. But unfortunately it’s in just that way that a lot of ships are scrapped when they have sailed their last seas.

The suit is brought on by the Center for Biological Diversity and blames the EPA for negligence in recognizing the impact of acidification in Washington’s waters.

It’s also important because it deals with the naming of carbon dioxide as a pollutant - something currently being contested by a “smoking gun” White House memo. The lawsuit has been brought up under the Clean Water Act, which regulates pollutants in water. From how I see it, this means that if EPA is found to be in the wrong under the Clean Water Act here, then CO2 will have been legally deemed a pollutant.

“The idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen, that it’s harmful to our environment, is almost comical. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Every cow in the world, you know, when they do what they do, you’ve got more carbon dioxide.”

Richard Phillips was rescued from that hostage situation in Somalian waters. The feature is an essay written by a Somalian-Canadian singer/activist and explains why Somalians don’t condemn, and sometimes even encourage, their pirates. The argument has been tossed around the Internet a bit, but I haven’t seen it much in mainstream media, and especially not now that we’ve just recovered one of our very own from a dangerous situation.

The argument runs: Many Somali pirates are just trying to keep Somalia’s waters clean.

It seems there hasn’t been anything big happening, but the comments about the environment in Pope Benedict XVI’s speeches and smaller environmental projects suggests that the environment is still part of the Pope’s spiritual mission.

Environment and Human Health contends that the used-tire mulch covering the playground causes skin and eye irritation and destroys mucus membranes, reports the Seattle Times. The group cites a review done by Sinai Hospital in New York in March that reported that playgrounds made from used tired tend to get very hot and can cause kids to get skin infections and inhale toxins and carcinogens.

This year, though, the Energy Department predicts we might be end the year at 6.98 billion tons.

Are efforts to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide actually working, or is there something else going on here? The answer, according to an economist at Harvard, is the latter: The recession will cause a drop in carbon emissions simply because there won’t be as many industries, homes and vehicles spewing the greenhouse gas into the air.

The ferry, a monster that could hold 866 people and 282 cars and that uses more fuel than a large plane, was kept running for a year even though it never had the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that’s required by the state of Hawaii.

Aside from the fires that ravaged the country in the south and flooding in the north that cut off towns for weeks, authorities just announced on Friday that some of the Sunshine Coast’s most diverse and popular natural areas are in a state of disaster. A ship registered in Hong Kong and belonging to the British firm Swire Shipping, the Pacific Adventurer, is the cause: On Wednesday it lost 31 shipping containers and suffered a leak from a tank that can hold 100,000 gallons of fuel.

The facilities - ones that produce 25,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions or more a year - include oil refineries, cement plants and motor vehicle manufacturers. If all goes well, EPA should have statistics by the year 2010, which could then provide the information needed to establish a federal cap on emissions.

It’s a measure that has been in the air for awhile now - George W. Bush originally drafted something of the sort. But the draft was rejected by the Office of Management and Budget. This new measure was originally written into a 2007 spending bill by Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), reports the Washington Post.

The argument is as follows: The European Union and California are at the forefront of creating green jobs, but each continues to see budget and job crises. And the European Union isn’t any closer to meeting its Kyoto target. Looking at these two places, why should we expect that Obama’s green jobs plan should be any more successful, especially in this time of recession?

The cost, of course, is still high, but hey, more people will probably buy into it, won’t they?

But what if there are no more solar companies left? Publicly-traded green technology companies, like those that research and manufacture those costly panels, are being hit hard in the stock market and some are facing bankruptcy; it may take more than homeowner incentive to lift them up again. Because while homeowners may buy the systems now at the new prices, the question is: Will they buy enough to keep the companies afloat?

I took a look at a few of the public solar companies to see which, if any, have survived the recent stock market crash. The news doesn’t look too good.
