<p>As the fastest land animal on Earth, the cheetah is a beast often referred to in metaphors, and studied for its movements. Humans, as you may have noticed, have something of an obsession with speed. Many of us won&#8217;t give up that obsession, no matter how much climate change may endanger our future. Did I mention humans are stubborn as well?</p>
<p>Thus the quest for a fossil fuel free future brings about a lot of interesting, outlandish, and outright weird ideas. This one is one of the weirdest, and yet it may actually have a future of sorts. Its a tricycle designed to mimic the movement of a cheetah&#8230; and, apparently, it works.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve always found most body kits to be silly. Side skirts, fender flares, and front splitters usually do little more than add weight and make a slow car look like it&#8217;s trying too hard to go fast. But every now and then a good, clean body kit can improve the appearance of a car, and if done right, even improve its aerodynamic properties.</p>
<p>Hybrids seem to be especially popular to make body kits for recently, with both the Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion Hybrid receiving different takes on body enhancements. Toyota is taking the game a step further with its Aerius body kit which offers subtle improvements to the exterior without negatively affecting the drag coefficient.</p>

<p>One hangup for a lot of folks unsure of electric drivetrains is the cost. Most <a href="http://gas2.org/2008/04/23/affordable-electric-cars-coming-to-us-in-2009/">electric cars</a> are out of the price range a majority of the population can afford, at least right now. Costs will go down as the technology spreads.</p>
<p>Brammo is getting a head start though, dropping the sales price of their Enertia Electric Motorcycle from $11,995 to $7,995, a 33% cut in price on a motorcycle that has only just hit the scene.</p>

<p>A lot can be said about Toyota&#8217;s hybrid flagship, the Prius. Heck, a lot already <em>has</em> been said about the odd, egg-shaped, fuel sipping little car. Love it or hate it, the Prius has been a sales success story, selling more units than all other hybrids combined while creating a cult of hypermilers and green geeks.</p>
<p>Looking to cash in on the success of the Prius, Toyota is reportedly planning to launch an entire line of Prius automobiles, perhaps even as its own sub-brand. The first contender for a new Prius badge is likely to be either a wagon or SUV, directly addressing the whole lack of cargo room on past Prius models.</p>

<p>In recent years, GM stuck the SS badge on more cars than it didn&#8217;t. For a long time the Super Sport moniker meant something, but sticking it on a turbocharged HHR delivery wagon did nothing to improve the General&#8217;s image. In a bit of an acknowledgment that maybe they went too far with the SS badge, GM has dumped many of these mistakes recently; currently the only vehicle with an SS badge is the Camaro.</p>
<p>So what does any of this have to do with Gas 2.0? GM&#8217;s vice-chairman, Bob Lutz, did not rule out the possibility of a Volt SS. Furthermore, the rumor mill is reporting that GM has given the green light to the Volt-based Cadillac Converj, a concept car that debuted earlier this year.</p>

<p>The tapering tail is no secret among scientists for improving stability and fuel efficiency. Many high-mileage concept cars feature just such a design to smooth the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Now imagine applying the same concept to container trucks that log more miles in a year than most of us travel in five.</p>
<p>A Dutch public-private enterprise did just that, adding a 6 foot long tail to the end of a tractor trailer truck. The results from two years of testing were a 7.5% increase in fuel efficiency, and thus a similar decrease in emissions.</p>

<p>I am extremely vocal on the topic of <a href="http://gas2.org/2008/04/23/affordable-electric-cars-coming-to-us-in-2009/">electric cars</a>, especially when it comes to their performance potential. Instant torque is very, very fun—to say the least—and makes a lot more sense on the racing circuit than internal combustion engines (at least in short bursts). Makers of high-end exotics are starting to pick up on this trend, though Ferrari is (as far as I know) the first supercar maker to confirm it will be adding and electric-hybrid to its lineup.</p>
<p>Of course, they claim this is to improve <em>handling</em> and not <em>fuel efficiency</em>. But hey, I&#8217;ll take what I can get from the prancing horse.</p>

<p>Ever feel like a sucker? Well right now, you should. After taking billions in bailout loans from the Federal Government, promising a half-million <a href="http://gas2.org/2008/04/23/affordable-electric-cars-coming-to-us-in-2009/">electric cars</a> on the road by 2013 and even going so as establishing an electric vehicles program, Fiat-owned Chrysler has renegged on pretty much all of its electric car promises after axing the ENVI program.</p>
<p>This should come as no surprise to anyone who saw <a href="http://gas2.org/2009/11/05/chrysler-goes-public-with-dodge-future-electric-cars-missing/">Chrysler&#8217;s revised vehicle lineup last week</a>, but it still feels like a kick in the gut.</p>

<p>While Chrysler&#8217;s alt-fuel plans for the future—and <a href="http://gas2.org/2009/11/05/chrysler-goes-public-with-dodge-future-electric-cars-missing/" target="_blank">its integrity</a>—seem uncertain at best, its cross-town rival General Motors is trying to make good on its fuel efficient pledges in a different way. This includes (finally) offering a Hummer with E85 flex-fuel capabilities, as promised in 2007.</p>
<p>Oh, and for those who are wishing for a Volt sub-brand, keep wishing. GM has no plans of spinning off the Volt as a brand of its own (as Toyota <em>might</em> do with the Prius). That won&#8217;t stop the General from spreading its hybrid drivetrain across other models, however.</p>

<p>Wouldn&#8217;t it be great if we could kill two birds with one stone? One day, we might be able to, but for now at least one company is working on a way to fix their fuel woes within the confines of their own business.</p>
<p>Waste Management, one of the biggest garbage companies in the country, says it will be able to produce 13,000 gallons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) <em>daily</em> from just one landfill in Northern California.</p>

<p>As I&#8217;ve said before, SEMA is not usually a place you expect to see lots of alternative fuel vehicles. But in recent years there has been a paradigm shift, and increasing floor space has been devoted to debuting technologies and cars that conserve gas, rather than waste it.</p>

As of 2005, there were approximately 168,987 gas stations in the United States; of those, just 2,200 sell E85 ethanol fuel.</p>
<p>No major oil outlets have fully embraced biofuels, although British Petroleum has just announced that it may begin commercial production of ethanol starting in 2010.</p>
<p>BP has partnered with Verenium to bring a commercial-scale <a href="http://gas2.org/2008/04/02/worlds-first-commercially-viable-cellulosic-ethanol-plant-online-2009/">cellulosic ethanol</a> facility online next year to start bringing alternative fuels to a gas pump near you.</p>
<p>BP has big plans for biofuels and seems to be marching towards an alternative fuel future faster than many of its competitors. Verenium already has a demonstration plant in Louisiana capable of producing over a million gallons of cellulosic ethanol annually, and BP hopes to ramp production up. The Verenium process uses proprietary enzymes to break down grass feedstock and convert it to ethanol more efficiently.</p>

<p>As an undergrad in college, I had the privilege of twice attending the annual Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. SEMA is mostly known for wild, outlandish, and powerful versions of street cars; it isn&#8217;t the kind of place you go to find people discussing fuel efficiency and hybrids.</p>
<p>But 2009 is a year of reckoning and big changes are afoot in the auto industry. One sign of the times: M&#38;J Enterprises has brought to this year&#8217;s SEMA a Ford Fusion Hybrid equipped with an aero body kit to reduce drag.</p>

<p>Like it or not, at least for the near future most of us are stuck with internal combustion engine powered cars. While a lot of hype is behind future cars and technology, from electric to hydrogen to everything in between, a lot of improvements can yet be made on the ICE engine.</p>
<p>To that end, the Department of Energy has awarded GM with $2.7 million to develop a working prototype of a Shape Memory Alloy engine. In theory, this engine could recycle the waste heat and turn it into electrical energy, perhaps one day even replacing alternators and improving fuel efficiency.</p>

<p>The new Volkswagen Scirocco is one of those cool cars America will never get (yes, I know we had it once, but the new one is <em>sooooo </em>much cooler). VW&#8217;s hot little hatchback has the looks and power to make most American small cars cringe in fear. Even cooler? They are working on a version that runs on <strong>carbon-neutral bio compressed natural gas.</strong></p>

<p>One major obstacle on the road to widespread acceptance of <a href="http://gas2.org/2008/04/23/affordable-electric-cars-coming-to-us-in-2009/">electric cars</a> is reliability. Electric cars are still relatively new ground, and anybody who has ever gotten a cellphone wet or left a laptop in a car during a hot summer day (guilty on both counts) knows that electronics are very sensitive to the elements. Apparently, they are also sensitive to potholes.</p>
<p>One of the &#8220;lucky&#8221; few who were given an Electric Mini to test out—the founder of GM-Volt.com found out just how sensitive when the Mini came to a dead stop in a construction zone after hitting one such pothole.</p>

<p>Trucking is among the most important, yet polluting parts of our environment. Everything everywhere was delivered by a truck, unless you live on a farm. A necessary evil, if you will. Getting truckers on board with the green movement will play an integral part in the widespread acceptance of alternative fuel vehicles. To do that, you&#8217;ve got to hit them in the wallet.</p>
<p>Towards that end, last week Vision Industries, with the help of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, unveiled a short haul, hydrogen-powered truck dubbed the Tyrano.</p>
