Sonia Aggarwal

I first had a chance to explore the intersection of environmental conservation, human rights, and poverty alleviation while working on a remote organic permaculture farm on the border between Panama and Costa Rica. Living miles from the nearest dirt road and without electricity or running water, I worked in the rainforest with indigenous Panamanians to harvest organic fruit seeds for other indigenous families to start their own organic farms. Following my tropical excursion in Central America, I headed to India, where I researched renewable energy solutions for rural communities in countries without comprehensive energy infrastructures. Much of my international environmental work was made possible through grants from the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship.

I enjoy being active in the cleantech community here in San Francisco - my team was recently chosen as a finalist for the 2007 California Cleantech Open. I graduated from Haverford College with a degree in Astronomy and Physics and I currently work in cleantech public relations at Antenna Group. I am a lifelong vegetarian and a six-year vegan; I firmly believe that the animal rights movement is inextricably linked to the environmental movement.
