Where Attachment Parents Lose Ground

Guilt. Augh, the guilt.

Many of us practice some form of natural parenting. Many of us choose breastmilk, cosleeping, babywearing, and whole foods for our babies and families.

But lately, I’ve noticed that something is lacking with a few vocal members of the attachment parenting community. Empathy. Yep, that’s putting yourself in another’s shoes.

You don’t have to agree. You don’t have to sanction. But it’d be nice if some APs would understand that it’s not as easy as popping a baby on a breast or in your bed. Life is not the same for everyone out there. Our experiences are different. Our reactions are different.

And until the Attachment Parenting community isolates the elitists, it will be hard to gain ground.

This week on Capitol Hill, the House Energy and Commerce Committee is in the process of thoroughly mutilating some of the science behind climate change and energy independence. With an expected 450 or so amendments to the American Clean Energy and Security Act, it is abundantly clear that politics and segmented interests are shaping what should largely be a scientific plan of action. One could easily ask the question: “Why are politicians doing what a scientist should be doing? Why aren’t the scientists telling us how this should go?” It is a question that has been discussed for decades, if not centuries, and boils down to whether or not a scientist has a duty to be—or to NOT be—an advocate for what he or she studies.

New Years Resolutions usually revolve around saving money or losing weight, not going green or doing good things for the environment. Most resolutions aren’t kept for more than a month or two with the resolution falling to the way side verses being maintained and achieved. This is usually do to the goals being set to high and not being obtainable.

This New Year, feel good about yourself, maybe lose some weight, save some money but best of all be some sparkling shade of green this New Year with these 9 easy and very manageable and obtainable tips:

1. Make a list. Write down exactly what your family can do to help the environment this New Year and pick one of these to start with. When you’ve mastered eating only veggies, limiting your meat intake or buying organic beef…move on to the next item but the list is what applies to YOU and YOUR family.
