If you do buy edamame, shop carefully to avoid beans grown in China. Many of the frozen organic varieties of edamame originate in China.

Even a year gone since the failure of Lehman, fundamental questions remain regarding the core underlying assumptions of our financial system. Though currently derivatives trading and black boxes appear out of favour, what will replace them in terms of helpful and productive uses of capital still has yet to be determined. This question was what the Conference on Social Capital Market’s, or SoCap09 tried to give some structure to; while the trend towards sustainable investments and long-term ROI seems to have taken the place of actively managed funds seeking 20x returns.

So what does this world presently look like? For one, It is not as easy to quantify as the Deloitte’s of the world would want it to be. In fact, Christopher Park from the company referred to standard accounting metrics as “a warm blanket” when compared with the confused and nascent metrics which provide assessment in this space. Secondly, these markets are not as tested as traditional investment options. The oldest of these players, Calvert Foundation has only been around for ten years in it’s current form. The new-kid-on-the-block-phenomenon is both Social Capital’s largest asset, since apparently Wall Street pre-2008 logic wasn’t exactly perfect, as well as being it’s biggest challenge. Though the perception of Social Capital investments as a novelty, coupled with a palpable unfamiliarity with the valuations make this space seem unlikely to attract traditional capital, maybe ‘Social Investing’ is just a new word for a very old idea.

From the start of capitalism there have been players whose goals were multiple. From the massive endowments of the Rockerfellers and Carnegies to the educational scholarships committed by what today are called ‘high net-worth individuals.’ These acts of philanthropy were the yin to the yang of free-market capitalism. The question now is whether metrics and forcastable, and market-rate ROI can be properly delivered by such investments. Fittingly, Rockerfeller Foundation and Deliotte among others are behind the current push to bring the metrics of high finance down into the social sphere. One such project, called IRIS for ‘Impact Reporting and Investing Standard’s’ goal is to set agreeable metrics so comparing between these investments will be simpler. These metrics will require reporting of data such as: job’s created, revenue, etc., and are the underlying piece to developing the GIIRS, or ‘Global Impact Investing Rating System’, which will be similar to rating agencies in other asset classes. These new elements will undoubtedly smooth the road between capital and investments, if only just through the process itself introducing these actors to one another. There will have to be strong deliberative processes since the space constitutes of everyone from hedge funds to single social entrepreneurs.

While metrics and ratings are one solution to the problem of moving capital into the social sphere, other problems remain. One refrain at the conference was that investors feel comfortable either maximizing their investment returns or giving away money to charity. Oddly enough investors who were asked to invest in these blended value products had so much difficulty bridging these two worlds that they often wanted to offer the money as a charitable donation. Though there are some reasons for making donations above proper investments due to tax laws, by-in-large this kind of response is nonsensical. Social funds not only infuse money towards inherently sustainable models, which need seed or growth funds, but they can often provide returns on the investments which in some cases exceed market-rate.

To combat this cultural wall, members of the Social Capitorati made the case that in order to attract capital, would-be ambassadors must use only the language of traditional finance. Jed Emerson of Uruhu Capital, who has espoused such social investments for many years discussed how at his fund he only speaks in phrases like ‘risk management’ and ‘qualitative assessment’ which, while they might seem euphemistic, could succeed in bringing down the barriers present for capital infusion into the space.

What is unclear still is how these investments will fit into the traditional investment paradigm-if they eventually are seen as being reasonable options for investors. One way to frame this comes from Skoll Foundation’s Dan Chrisafulli, who said that small and medium enterprises are “durable assets which are very good as part of a blended portfolio.” This seems to be the view of many with regard to the micro-finance space already. What was said as a goal for the sector at the conference is an eventual infusion of between 5 and 15 percent of total assets under management. My question is, what are the distinct borders of the space? As companies large and small begin to analyze more of their unintended consequences, and non-profits find that relying on grants limits their growth possibilities, aren’t we all moving closer to the middle by default?

Lastly, more capital will not mean that social entrepreneurs will have any less challenges- quite the contrary. Just as venture capital creates a few winners (in the neighborhood of ten percent of funded companies really find those 20x returns which fuel the industry), so too will social ventures find challenges along the road to high impact. Juggling multiple goals makes reaching each one infinitely more complex, and without the simplicity of singular attention on profits, running either a business or social enterprises now will be a much more multifaceted endeavor. This hearkens true for the supply-side of capital as well. While old investments really could boil down to ROI over the short-term, liabilities are everywhere for companies making an impact ( which is inherently larger at scale). The days of only focusing on the bottom line are done. The flip side is that we are no longer living in a bifurcated world where money and meaning are painted as mutually exclusive. While definitions of value will have to become hammered out through intense deliberative processes, only two eventualities could possibly exist: either irreconcilable challenges will emerge, or reasonable fusions are going to be found.

One thing is sure, when the convener of the conference Kevin Jones called Social Markets “the intersection of money and meaning” a year ago at the first SoCap conference, a nebulous middle-path emerged which could-with enough work-make the science of economics just a little less dismal.

If you missed Green iPhone Apps Reviewed Part 1: Free Apps, you can see it here. After my first batch of reviews on the free green iPhone apps, I have gotten some great suggestions on green apps. If you have any you you would like to see reviewed, you can comment here, head over to my website www.danielhohler.com, or twitter me @danielhohler. I am not a hard man to find. I have already gotten a whole new batch that people would like to hear about, so it looks like by popular demand there will be green iPhone apps part 3, so stay tuned here on planetsave.com.

iPhone apps are sweeping the nation. For those of us who own iPhones, we know just how useful a good app can be. The problem is that there are so many apps floating around, finding a really good app is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. However, don’t fret. I am here to pick up all of those straws of hay and tell you if indeed they are hay, or maybe just maybe, a needle. Or with less metaphor, I’ll try them and tell you if they are any good.

Your spouse’s/partner’s birthday? Perhaps forgetting the anniversary on which you started blogging isn’t quite the same, but after six years and thousands of posts, I felt like a total dolt when I realized today that July 10th (not today, the 12th) was sustainablog’s “birthday.”

That’s right: six years (and two days) ago, I created a new Blogger account, and started wrestling with this concept of sustainability that I’d only recently discovered. There’ve been lots of twists and turns since then, but it’s really gratifying to look back and see the growth and development of my little blog in that time.

While most of us associate birthdays/anniversaries with gifts and celebrations, these dates are also the perfect time for expressing gratitude, and looking forward (as well as back). I owe many people thanks for their support, including

The folks at Green Options: sustainablog’s always been a little unique in the GO network: rather than narrowly focusing on a niche within the green world, we’ve always done a little bit of everything. That has its ups and down, and I’m grateful to my friends at GO (and new parent company Virgance) for their patience with and support of our model.

The green blogosphere: You can’t blog in a vacuum… or, at least, you can’t blog in a vacuum and expect to build much of an audience. From early on, sustainablog’s received a ton of support from both big and small players within the green online media space. Special hat tips to Grist (one of the first big sites to link to us), Treehugger (for the writing gig and frequent linkage), Worldchanging (for frequent early linkage and some guest posting opportunities), Triplepundit, HuffPo Green, Green, Inc., Greenbiz, Lighter Footstep… I’m just getting started. Whether you’re listed or not, know that I appreciate your support.

I know, I know–most of these holidays are just ploys by greeting card companies to get us to buy stuff. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day–it’s a plot by Hallmark to get me to spend my hard-earned money on a bunch of nonsense.

I have two little kids, though, and a loving partner. There’s no WAY I’m giving up the glory of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, and heck, I’ll do my part on Father’s Day, too. And it is nice to have a sanctioned event handy to remind us to honor and celebrate our loved ones, to demonstrate our gratitude and appreciation of them. Especially when we’re honoring mothers. As in me.

Everyone in my family knows, though, that I only like gifts that are 1) handmade, 2) food (especially if it’s also homemade), 3) camera stuff, or 4) craft supplies. And nobody hardly ever gets me camera stuff.

So here’s a list of five nifty, crafty, handmade gifts that you can make in plenty of time for Mother’s Day. Just in case, you know, you don’t have a good camera store near you:

Okay, war sound harsh but it’s a battle of sorts. Is BPA safe or isn’t it? Is it a myth that BPA is harmful and the media is fooling us because we don’t have the facts? Well, according to Mom Style News or Mom Myth Busters (same author), yes. If you follow me on twitter you might know, Friday there was a big twitter debate going on over this. The Good Human, Safe Mama, To Think and Nature Mom , twittered their opinion.

Here is it is folks, BPA might not kill you if your child drinks out of a sippy cup or has some canned food lined with BPA. Sure, I conceded to this. BPA is a chemical and the FDA and EPA has limits of safety so companies use this and then hide behind it, because they can. Companies that have gone with BPA free products have done so because of consumer demands. Why are consumers demanding this? Duh, because there are risks. Who’s most at risk? The fetus, infants and children are most at risk. Even the reports sited by Mom Style News don’t discount that, she just says they are minimal. Well, my son has a minimal risk of getting hit on our road when he crosses it because of the traffic statistics or what I observe. So I should let him just take that “minimal” risk. It’s just a possibility and not a fact! That’s how ridiculous this debate is! Here are the facts that have led ME to know that choosing BPA FREE is the right thing to do and since Mom Style News is all about the facts and going by what the facts are and not just reading mommy blogs (which I love, support, read and rely on) here it is…

FACT: The government sources are basing their decisions and statements on assessments with hundreds of flaws and errors. The FDA has based it’s decision on two studies, funded by the plastics industry.

The Gort Cloud:
The Invisible Force Powering Today’s Most Visible Green Brands
by Richard Seireeni with Scott Fields
240 pp. Chelsea Green

It is like what Van Jones called the “invisible network of networks.” Everyone who is in it (and some who stand outside it) know it is there, but they just aren’t sure how to define it, or what shape it takes.

In a new book called The Gort Cloud, branding expert Richard Seireeni takes a stab at capturing the moving target of social networks, sustainability, and green business and captures it with the perfect metaphor — a cloud. But Seireeni doesn’t use any old cloud for his metaphor, the book gets its name from an amorphous field of stellar debris called the Oort Cloud. Seireeni writes:

“I began to think of this particular green network as something tangible with a mission and with a collective membership of like-mined people. It wasn’t a single community. It wasn’t a movement, It defied easy definition.”

No such thing as a crafty recycling Must List? I’m totally going to write one), vintage buttons would be at the top of that list (…and I’m going to put vintage buttons at the top when I write my list).

Not only has the entire CraftyStylish blog declared March as button month in celebration of West Coast Crafty’s new book, Button it Up, but we here at Crafting a Green World are known to love our buttons, too–check out these vintage button monogram pillows, or the felted wool weekend projects that include button-topped flowers. In the same way in which I blog, obsessively, every single day about my crafty life on my personal blog and read the crafty blogs of others, there is also an audio/video version of that same crafty obsession that can be watched or listened to at one’s leisure.

While you grade papers, or wash the dishes, or eat your lunch, or walk home from school at night, you can listen to craft news (the CPSIA, although delayed, is still a big deal), craft opinion (which type of knitting needles are the best?) and interviews with other crafty people (Alicia Paulson has a lot of interesting things to say about the process of writing a craft how-to book).

I heart podcasts.

In a chilling precedent for economics bloggers around the globe, a South Korean economics blogger was arrested, and charged with “Spreading false economic information on the internet.” If convicted, the Korean economics blogger, could serve 5 years in jail.

Apparently “Minerva”, the internet pseudonym for the arrested Mr. Park aka “economic president of the internet”, gained a large following by accurately predicting the financial collapse. “Minerva” went too far and committed a crime, according to the judge and reported by the Associated Press, by claiming on an internet discussion board that the South Korean government ” had ordered major financial institutions and trade businesses not to purchase U.S. dollars.” His posting “affected foreign exchange markets and the nation’s credibility,” said the judge.
At this time it is impossible to verify whether the accusations are accurate, in any case Mr. Park pleaded not guilty to all charges at his court hearing on Saturday, and is receiving wide spread support in the Korean Blogosphere.

You can show your support for Mr. Park, by sending a message to the Honorable Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Lee Tae-sik, and demand that his government immediately release Mr. Park and respect free speech on the internet. You can also help to keep the internet free, by supporting the premier internet watchdog group, the “Electronic Frontier Foundation” with a much needed donation.

There was no shortage of fodder for thoughtful political discussion in 2008. Not surprisingly, the bulk of the comments were directly related to the presidential election. Here we’ve compiled the nine most-discussed posts of 2008 so you can take a little walk down memory lane at Red, Green, and Blue.

9. McCain’s Colorado River Gaffe Might Cost Him Key Western States by Timothy B. Hurst

“John McCain has again said something to cause his fellow western-state Republicans to wince at his political inexpedience and apparent naivete for the issue at hand. And even though the Senator has now recanted and begun damage control, Democrats are hoping that this one will cost him. Some even argue that the gaffe was so severe, he may have just lost Colorado.”

8. Imagine a $700 Billion Bailout for the Environment by Jennifer Lance

One of the biggest stories of 2008 (and likely again in 2009) was the economic collapse and the ensuing expanding role of the U.S. Government in backing large corporations. On October 1st, Jennifer Lance considered what that kind of money could do for the environment: “I can’t help but wonder what a $700 billion bailout would do for the environment. What if the US government had responded to the twenty years of dire warnings by James Hansen in the same manner as the current economic crisis? Such an aggressive response may have stopped climate change and saved our economy through green jobs and technology.”

7. Schwarzenegger Jumps on Obama’s Proper Tire Inflation Bandwagon by Timothy B. Hurst

Separating himself from his party’s leadership (again), California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger backed the launch of EcoDriving USA, a new web portal aimed at sharing gas-saving tips. About the Republican misstep that gave such rich context to this launch, I wrote: “GOP strategists saw an opportunity to pounce on this bold claim by Senator Obama. And they, along with their friend Rush Limbaugh, lampooned and ridiculed Obama’s tire pressure assertion as a joke. The McCain campaign even went so far as handing out tire gauges branded with the slogan “Obama’s Energy Plan” to reporters traveling with Senator Obama. Let me just say this, whomever was in charge of that “brilliant” move at McCain HQ should be canned.”

Many bloggers and webmasters are wont to check their stats so often it borders on behavior that could be classified as obsessive-compulsive. Fortunately, that is how the folks behind the scenes at the New Orleans-based activist group, Levees.org learned that the harassing comments being left at their blog were coming from computers registered to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Well, maybe they weren’t OC about checking their stats, but after this incident, I’m guessing they just might be now.

Levees.org is a watchdog activist group that is pushing for an independent analysis of the “failure of the federal flood protection system” in metro New Orleans on August 29, 2005.” The group’s founder, Sandy Rosenthal did some digging into her stats after an unusually high volume of “negative comments” began rolling into the blog.

In other words- our kinda agency.

I asked Dean to tell me a little about his business and give us some advice for ecopreneurs interested in marketing and PR - and who isn’t?

Some tidbits from our conversation

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Eco Child’s Play has a Twitter account, and although we have found many green moms and dads already, we would like to follow more!

Therefore, we have created the definitive list of green parents on Twitter to make it easier for our readers to find each other.

Of course, we have unintentionally omitted a few names, so we hope you will leave a comment with your Twitter details if you are not on our list. Furthermore, we are hosting a contest for all of our new followers (details following the list).

There’s a phenomenon in the blogging community that I like to refer to as The Artful Parent: in this blog, parenting and the booming DIY/handmade/arts and crafts movement interconnect. Both activities are discussed in equal measures, although the real emphasis is more, perhaps, on the status of both parenting and crafting as meaningful (if usually unpaid) work, the lessons that can be taught to and learned from children while crafting for and with them, and how creativity and inspiration are rewarding mindsets that can be taken from and brought to both parenting and crafting.

Most of these blogs also share a focus on the handmade over the store-bought; the use of natural, found, and/or recycled materials over brand-new and/or synthetic ones; and the act of parenting as a gentle, positive, attached life’s work. Here are a few of my favorites of these blogs:

Yesterday afternoon my phone rang, just as my daughter was waking up from her nap. A magazine reporter was on the line, we had a scheduled phone interview. Was it that time of day, already? Most of the questions were the usual interview questions about BPA, toxic products, mommy bloggers and my story of how I started going green and why. Then there was the question that stumped me.

“How do you deal with greenwashing?”
