Can You Find One Accurate Statement from McPalin on the Environment? You Win!

Writing Tuesday in the Huffington Post, Sierra Club president Carl Pope laid down a challenge to his readers to “catch McCain/Palin getting it right”.

Pope refers specifically to the ticket’s statements and record on energy and the environment. Pope is apparently frustrated enough with John McCain and Sarah Palin getting basic facts about these issues “wrong so consistently” that he’s offered a signed copy of his new book Strategic Ignorance to the first person that submits at least one “consequential energy or environmental statement that McCain and Palin have gotten right.”

To McCain and Palin’s credit, Pope identifies one accurate statement (and so this doesn’t count in the challenge): The Republican ticket is correct in asserting that John McCain stood up to the Senate’s GOP leadership, sponsoring, with Joe Lieberman, the Climate Stewardship Act that calls for a cap and trade system to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s it? Surely they’ve said something else about energy or the environment that isn’t wrong?

The Sarah Palin Chronicles: In Her Own Words

It’s all too obvious why Sarah Palin got the VP nod. And Saturday Night Live makes this point most brilliantly: Hillary Clinton.

Though I wish the GOP was progressive enough to have a woman on the presidential ticket. That is, based on merit and not merely as a political pawn. Much in the same vein, I would also love for wars to be fought with hugs and Skittles. I really don’t see that one happening either.

Since the announcement of Palin joining the Republican ticket, a lot of buzz has been made about the Alaskan Governor. For example, her limp stance on Global Warming. Then there’s her support of the Bridge to Nowhere. Don’t forget the whole Troopergate fiasco. And sometimes it’s even hard to tell if she is with us or against us; mostly against, by the way.

And the media-machine that gnawed away for eighteen months on the Obama-Clinton flavored primary quickly shifted to the virtual unknown. Heck, I have done so myself! And while I’d like to continue waxing politically about her qualifications for the VP slot, I am stuck - somewhat reluctantly - with only one thing to say: MILF.

Yes, Palin was picked because of Clinton. Duh! It’s calculated, shameless and oh so very very smart. But why does it matter? Mostly because McCain is so very very old.

The GOP is no stranger to having a token VP - ahem…Dan Quayle! But with McCain having one foot in the grave, Palin’s political stance matters more than those prior. It matters that the energy-expert-wanna-be doesn’t think man’s had anything to do with the climate crisis. It matters that she backs an offshore drilling solution to our oil crisis. But don’t take my word for it, take hers.

Setting the Record Straight: Sarah Palin and the Bridge to Nowhere

Sarah Palin has been the talk of the nation. As each new story is revealed, citizens wonder if John McCain really did his homework in chosing this vice presidential candidate. From teen pregnancy to a legislative ethics investigation, over 45 problems in just 35 hours have erupted with the presumptive Republican VP choice. From forcing her daughter to have a hypothetical rapist’s child to not supporting McCain in the primaries, Palin may soon be the biggest embarrassment to the Republican Party since George W. Bush. As of last week, you may have never heard of Sarah Palin if you lived in the lower 48; however, you’ve probably heard of Alaska’s infamous “Bridge to Nowhere”.

The “Bridge to Nowhere“, aka the Gravina Island Bridge, was advocated by Ted Stevens, who was indicted on federal corruption charges. Palin jumped on the bandwagon in supporting the $398 million project as part of her 2006 campaign for governor. The bridge would have been as long as the Golden Gate Bridge, and it would have replaced a ferry currently used to transport the island’s 50 residents, as well as tourists, to an international airport. In 2006 when asked about the bridge, Palin stated:

I do support the infrastructure projects that are on tap here in the State of Alaska that our Congressional delegations worked hard for…I would like to see Alaska’s infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now — while our Congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.
