Over 2,500 people from across the country gathered at the Capitol Power Plant today and blocked all five entrances to the plant for almost four hours.

Operators did not attempt to enter the facility, leaving the plant without human attendants and inoperable for the day. NASA scientist James Hansen, Robert Kennedy, Jr., Bill McKibben, Wendell Berry, and Daryl Hannah were among the participants who risked arrest to make this statement against coal power.

Today, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Harry Reid released a letter asking the Capitol Architect to switch the Capitol Power Plant from coal to 100 percent natural gas by the end of 2009.

The switch to natural gas will allow the CPP to dramatically reduce carbon and criteria pollutant emissions, eliminating more than 95 percent of sulfur oxides and at least 50 percent of carbon monoxide.

Pelosi and Reid’s letter comes just three days before more than 2,500 people from across the country will converge at the power plant for the biggest civil disobedience on climate issues in U.S. history.

Noting that the Capitol Power Plant continues to be the number one source of air pollution and carbon emissions in the District of Columbia, the Congressional leaders thanked the Capitol Architect for the work they had done on increasing efficiency at CPP but that, “more must be done to dramatically reduce plant emissions and the CPP’s impact.”

Did the Capitol Climate Action succeed before it even began?

Well, sort of.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent a letter to the Capitol Architect asking the Capitol Power Planet to switch from coal to natural gas by the end of 2009. The proposal has been made in the past, but shut down by pro-coal legislatators.

Global warming deniers and conservative politicians have fallen into a frenzy after Dr. James Hansen recorded a video in support of the upcoming Capitol Climate Action, a well-coordinated act civil disobedience coming up this Monday.

“If he wants to have a demonstration concerning global warming, coming to the Capitol is not a right choice,” said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-CA. “The bottom line is if Hansen wants to protest global warming, he should go to the National Cathedral and take it up with God rather than going to Capitol Hill.”

February 27th – March 2nd for Powershift 09. While there, these young people will be carrying a message for Congress: we want bold, comprehensive and immediate federal climate action.

They will also receive training to become the future leaders of the climate action movement, with workshops on a variety of topics like lobbying members of Congress, corporate accountability, environmental justice, organizing 101 and more. They will also be connecting with other participants from their states and will be invited to a career fair hosted by Idealist and a graduate school opportunities fair.

Friday February 27th will begin the four day Powershift 2009 conference, which is set to become the largest ever youth conference on climate change. But history will be made on Monday, March 2nd, when thousands of youth lobby Congress and thousands of others march to the Capitol Coal Plant to take part in what should become the largest ever act of climate change related civil disobedience.

Over 10,000 high school and college aged students are expected to turn out to this year’s Powershift conference. 2007’s conference had thousands of attendees and speakers such as Van Jones, Ralph Nader and Nancy Pelosi. This year is expecting some of the same big names, and more.
