A man who stabbed an Emu to death ‘because he wanted to eat it for Christmas lunch’ has been fined almost A$4,000 (US$2,500) for animal cruelty.

An Australian court heard that, two days before Christmas, Patrick James Andrews, 23, crept into the Emu enclosure at Alexandra zoo in south-east Queensland, where he repeatedly stabbed a 30-year-old Emu named Mary, before cutting its legs off. Zoo staff later found the animal dead in its enclosure.

It used to be that people exchanged handwritten greetings during the holidays. Not so much anymore. Sending commercially printed holiday cards is a relatively new concept that began in London in 1834 and it really caught on.

About 2 billion holidays cards are sent every year, making Christmas the largest card-sending occasion in the United States. So, you are not alone when trying to decide what to do with the collection of holiday cards you have amassed. The good news is that whether its for a for a good cause or a good project, there are all sorts of ways to keep cards out of landfills.

1. Until February 15 St. Jude’s Ranch, a home and treatment center for abused, neglected and abandoned children, is accepting used greeting cards of all kinds, which their children use to create “new” (and green) cards that they sell.

2. For those of you in California, Arizona and Nevada, you can drop off cards at bins in Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets until January 20. They will recycle them and donate the proceeds to American Forests. Last year, the holiday card recycling program raised enough money for American Forests to buy and plant 1,000 trees in areas devastated by wildfire. Amazingly, there does not seem to be a similar national program for recycling holiday cards. (is there an opportunity here…)

What are you going to change about Christmas 2009 to reduce your GHG emissions? Have you thought about the issues that effect your carbon footprint? Now that Christmas has passed and we get back to less festive times, its maybe time to look at things.

I was prompted to post on this by an evening drive I took with my family to Lawley Street (-25.780785° 28.242231°) in Waterkloof, a suburb of Pretoria, South Africa.

Lawley Street is some 1.8 km long and is the address for approximately 90 large suburban houses, many of them are diplomatic corps & embassy residences. This normally quiet suburban road was filled with cars crawling up and down its length, all their to see the houses glittering in Christmas lights installed each year by the house owners.

Lawley Street Christmas Decorations

A simple calculation, admittedly involving many assumptions, gives good estimates of the carbon footprint of “The Lawley Lights”.

What now?

If your family is anything like mine, among the fabulous handmade items we received (like the beaded cross necklace and crochet handbag my kids received and adore!) there are also lots of toys in cardboard and plastic packages.

You can recycle those packages, but it takes a little work on your part.

First: Separate out your wrapping paper. Any foil accent paper cannot be recycled. Use this for craft projects like Thank You cards or Decoupage. Place the rest of your paper into the recycling bin (we like to fold ours up so it isn’t all crumbled).

You can gather it all up and toss it in the recycling bin, or reuse it yourself for some recycled craft fun. Recycle your used wrapping paper into thank you cards to let people know how much you loved their gifts. Making handmade cards like these is just one way to create special memories in your family.

when what was to be seen,
Not a fossil fuel stirring, as Santa went green.
He’s already horse-powered, no petrol on his list,
But this year he’s adding a new sustainability twist,
In our crazy-busy world, we needed someone to share,
A way to live with joy and appreciation, a reason to care.
Too many messages today of fear, emptiness and dread,
Santa wanted transformation to dance in our head.
So as young and old nestled all snug for the night,
Santa’s sleigh took off in a different light.
Sure he packed toys for good kids but there was more,
Something that comes from a garden, not just store.
Santa dug in his root cellar and brought out his . . .
Yukon Gold . . .

It’s not a snazzy or snappy title. Or a timely news item. But that’s okay.

My husband and I just went into the basement and to put all the kid’s presents in bags and label them.

During the process we both stopped and had to give each other pep talks. That’s because we took turns freaking out.

There aren’t that many presents! Only a handful for each and some little things for the stockings. Are we bad parents? Are we depriving our kids? Of course we want to shower them with all good things!

When the you’ve grown up in the 80s, and you’ve seen too much media, piles and piles of presents under the tree are burned in your retinas. Normal Rockwell paintings, or Maxwell House coffee commercials. Happy, shiny faces surrounded by mountains of gifts. Even if we fight it, even if it doesn’t fit in with our life philosophies, we still doubt ourselves in our decisions. At least that is what we did.

Did we do enough for them? Will they feel enough love and happiness?

It was quarter past dawn…
All the Whos, still a-bed,
All the Whos, still a-snooze
When he packed up his sled,
Packed it up with their presents! The ribbons! The wrappings!
The tags! And the tinsel! The trimmings! The trappings!

When the Grinch stole Christmas, he not only stole the presents, he stole all the things that accompany Christmas that end up as waste. He stole the ribbons, the wrappings, the tags, the tinsel, the trimmings, the trappings plus the Christmas trees and the food for the feast.

And what was the Grinch going to do with all that stuff he really didn’t want?

Three thousand feet up! Up the side of Mt. Crumpit,
He rode with his load to the tiptop to dump it!

Pretty much the same thing most of us have done in the past with all our Christmas leftovers, right? We dumped them. Not off the side of Mt. Crumpit, but in the trash.

This year, when we’ve got things leftover from Christmas, let’s be responsible with their disposal.

Can a winter’s holiday feast be local and sustainable? It doesn’t seem such an easy task, even for a locavore like myself as I contemplate turnips, a few remaining pumpkins and sweet potatoes. Even so, with some resourcefulness and help from regional chefs of the Bon Appetit Management Company, we can all have a Low-Carbon Christmas — even in the frozen tundra of the upper Midwest.

Bon Apetit, a company that offers corporations, universities and colleges onsite catering and food service with a commitment to sustainable, local cuisine, had four of its chefs from various regions of the country put together low-carbon, high-flavor menus for the season.

The regions include Upper Midwest (follows), Northeast, West Coast and Southeast. Each of the menus will be featured in an Eat Drink Better post beginning with the upper Midwest menu, below.

General tips for parties and seasonal gathering that keep things low carbon include not using bottled water or disposable dinnerware. Don’t use bottled water and compost food waste as much as possible. Use less beef and dairy products.

Is your Resolution to Kickstart the Next Clean Revolution?

A post by contributing writer Melissa Chungfat.

I talked to one of my friend’s yesterday and she told me that the staff Christmas party wasn’t nearly as joyful as in previous years. Half of the people who came to the party were let go. There have been record layoffs since the economy has gone south, and it’s hard to talk to someone whose family hasn’t been impacted in some way.

When a project is quick–it doesn’t require a lot of prep or clean-up, provides results in a timely manner, and is simple enough that everyone can contribute meaningfully–you can focus your energy on the interaction with your loved ones instead of on the project. When a project is thrifty–it doesn’t require a lot of pricey materials, and ideally utilizes stuff you already possess–the stakes are low enough that everyone can enjoy themselves instead of fussing about appearance. And when a project is eco-friendly–it makes primary use of natural materials and recycling–then you show your kids that being green is a worldview, not a fad.

The projects below are all quick, thrifty, and eco-friendly. And also? They’re fun.

In a report due to be released this Thursday in San Francisco, NASA scientists will reveal satellite imagery indicating that over 2 trillion tons of polar land ice has melted since 2003, we contacted the most famous polar resident to get his reaction.

In the following exclusive pre-Christmas interview, Inspired Economist investigative reporter Ramsay Mameesh, asks Santa Claus about his role in causing global warming and the dangers it poses for his business. As well as China’s effect on North Pole Industries’ toy market share. And how the economic downturn is impacting toy production.

Ramsay Mameesh: Santa Claus, thank you so much for agreeing to do an interview with the Inspired Economist, I know you’re a busy man so close to Christmas. I think everyone is familiar with who you are, so to save time I’ll skip the usual introduction, and get straight to questions. Do you feel any sense of responsibility for our current climate crisis?

Santa Claus: Ho, Ho, Ho. I see you’re still upset about not getting the Tonka Truck Fire Engine that one Christmas!

RM: Yeah, something like that. But seriously, don’t you think the culture of consumption that you personally promote, is directly responsible for melting polar ice-caps? I mean, you may be driving yourself out of business, doesn’t that concern you?

Santa Claus: Yes, we are very concerned about climate change, and that’s why I have appointed a special committee of Elves to explore solutions. One of the Elf’s suggestions is that we begin using Reindeer poop, to power our facilities, instead of coal. It’s sort of a nasty Catch-22, North Pole Industries is a toy manufacturer, and if we don’t produce toys we’re out of business. On the other hand, over consumption is causing climate change, and endangering our manufacturing facilities. I want to assure you, and all the good boys and girls, that as CEO of North Pole Industries we will find creative solutions. Christmas will continue.

RM: That’s good to know, I’m sure children around the world, will be relieved to hear that Christmas will continue. However, you did not answer my question, are you willing to admit for the record that you played a key role in causing global warming?

My daughter brings one home with a treat from the class birthday party. Her friend brings one over with a snack to share during their playdate. I buy some dried spearmint to make spearmint tea, and the shopkeeper measures it out into a tiny little sandwich bag.

And I’m sorry, friends–I just cannot wash these things out and reuse them. Ever since I was pregnant with Willow, my gag reflex has just been on a hair trigger. Know what I can do, though? Heat them up, make them pretty, and throw them on the Christmas tree. It’s like this fusing plastic bags project, only with glitter! Don’t believe me? Watch and see.

The winter holidays are almost upon us, and whether you’re celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or the holiday(s) of another tradition, you may still be stumped for gifts to give this year… especially gifts that fit your own (and the recipients’) values.

For the past few years, I’ve moved away from buying “stuff” as much as possible, and focused on giving the gift of giving (say that three times fast!). That is, I look for gifts that contribute to larger causes. After writing about ‘TisBest gift cards a couple of weeks ago, I started brainstorming on other good “gifts that keep on giving” for the “treehugger” on your list.

Adopt an Animal: This has become my mainstay for my neice and nephews. We don’t get them a pet; rather, we make a donation to the Missouri Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch “Barn Buddy” program. You can check with your local Humane Society or ASPCA chapter for similar programs. If wildlife is more your thing, Defenders of Wildlife has “adoption” gifts featuring wolves, penuins, polar bears, and other animals.

I feel bad for the trees during the holiday season. Not only are they cut down for our living rooms, but the amount of paper waste generated by holiday hooplah is just astounding.

Between Thanksgiving and New Years Day, Americans throw away an additional 25% of waste. That’s over 25 million tons of trash for the holiday season. Greeting cards, envelopes, gift wrap, cardboard boxes and all the trimmings that make our holidays festive really add up in the landfill.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to be festive and green at the same time. Ecopreneurs preparing their holiday marketing promotions can learn a thing or two from creative business owners like Von Glitschka, an independent graphic designer and illustrator in Salem, Oregon. Instead of sending a printed holiday mailing, Von created a fun promotion and made it available as a PDF file online. That way his recipients could choose to print and assemble the “4th Not So Wiseman” at home, or just enjoy it online without printing a thing. Not only do online promotions like this save a bundle on printing and postage costs, but they eliminate envelopes and paper cards, and thus, waste.

Von’s Not So Wiseman also comes along with a green message and a cute story by Kristen Fischer. The Not So Wiseman is not so popular because he brought coal as a gift for baby Jesus, but “Jesus just wasn’t down” with coal’s production of greenhouse gases. Now the 4th Wiseman serves as a reminder to be green and kind to the earth, because if you don’t, you deserve nothing more than coal for Christmas! You can download and create your very own 4th Not So Wiseman at Von’s blog, Art Backwash. Don’t forget to print him out on recycled paper!

This weekend, the Eco Gift Festival returns to Santa Monica for its second year, offering more than just endless booths of sustainable, eco-friendly finds (though those are great, too).

This year, organizers have added a multitude of speakers and musicians, making this event more than just a gift-buying frenzy. Their big “get”? Arianna Huffington, nationally-syndicated columnist, author, radio host, and founder of The Huffington Post, one of the most-read news and blog sites on the internet.

In my house, idle hands seriously do perform the devil’s business–if the devil’s business includes trashing the house, squabbling with sisters, and whining for treats, that is. Therefore, cheap as I am, my girls and I often do productive little projects together; this one is a set of sewing cards made from kitschy old vinyl record album covers. Follow along and at the end you can have yourself a merry little five minutes of peace wherein the kids are busily sewing and not griping. (NOTE: This project is very similar to the kitschy Christmas record album cover ornaments project–if you’re making one, then make both!)
