Will Shai Agassi’s Better Place Get the ‘Colbert Bump’?

Less than a week after switchable EV battery pioneer Better Place announced a newly expanded agreement with French car maker Renault, the company’s founder and CEO, Shai Agassi appeared as a guest on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report in hopes of getting that sought-after ‘Colbert Bump’.

The Colbert Bump, as it is known, is a phenomenon wherein people (places, companies, ideas) that appear on the Colbert Report receive a sudden boost in popularity for their cause.

The deal announced by Agassi in Frankfurt builds on an agreement reached between the two companies in August and will be to install the Better Place battery system (and build-out the charging network) for the Renault Fluence ZE for sale in Israel and Denmark. The Fluence ZE was one of four models in Renault’s new line of electric cars unveiled last week at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Stephen Colbert delves into the passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act, including the choice words House Minority Leader John Boehner had for it and the “exorbitant” $175 annual pricetag.

“I believe in climate change for a very important reason,” said Colbert during his show last night, “so I can market the new Colbert Report Green. It’s just like the regular Colbert Report except we reduce emissions by jumping on the bandwagon.” Watch it:

In his interview segment on Wednesday night, Steven Colbert sat down with John Fetterman, the Mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania. In between the usual Colbert shtick, Fetterman managed to make some interesting points about what the town of Braddock is trying to do in this era of green stimulus. His suggestion for how to bring back his town? Experimentation!

“When you say that your town is open for Urban experimentation… Are you taking part in these experiments? because you look like you’ve received a large dose of Gamma Radiation”

Where the Steel Goes…

The town of Braddock was once a thriving population of 20,000 people, all based around an active steel industry. We know what happens to Allegheny towns when the Steel industry leaves: it’s not a pretty sight. The town is now completely bankrupt, boasts a population of 2,500 people and a sign that says “Open for Good Ideas”. It appears that anyone with a good Shovel Ready project idea can use Braddock as a blank canvas. Fetterman is trying to use the Colbert Bump to bump his town back into relevance — on the back of green inventors and green ideas!
