Held in and around Coors Field in Denver, the event mixed two of my favorite things–renewable energy and politics–at one of my favorite places to be–a baseball park. Unfortunately, there was no baseball.

Outside the stadium was the normal smattering of solar demonstrations, booths, and vendors, Inside the stadium was a political rally of sorts; mixing music with speakers, including an impassioned talk given by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Unfortunately, I fear that slap won’t register properly with enough people in the status quo, those who cling to oil and more oil as if it’s the only way forward.

During a commercial break from MSNBC’s coverage of the final night of the Democratic National Convention held in Denver, the American Petroleum Institute, the trade organization for the Oil and Natural Gas Industry, ran a spot touting domestic oil and gas reserves that Democrats are keeping us Americans from reaching.

Wednesday morning I attended a rooftop “Convention Conversation” at the Denver Athletic Club sponsored by The Denver Post, Politico, and Yahoo! The event featured former Senator Tom Daschle, presidential historian Michael Beschloss, and Representative Rahm Emmanuel. And though I thought I was late when I rolled in at 8:26, the busy Rahm Emmanual arrived fashionably late at just around 9 for the 8 AM event. Fortunately, the breakfast-time meeting didn’t kick off until about 8:45, after this under-rested, hungry blogger was able to capitalize on some free coffee, fruit and bagels.

The topic on the docket was whether or not Barack Obama had “the right stuff” to be the President of the United States. Panelists discussed the personal qualities that have distinguished the nation’s greatest presidents and whether or not Obama possesses them.

They get patriot points for glitter, but MSNBC’s Chris Mathews took the cake with his kinetic hair sculpture. It reminds us all of the important part wind power can play in our renewable energy needs.

That’s not exactly what I had in mind for the focus of this post though. Protests are a great example of craftivism that easily tips the scale to activism. After all, you can’t buy “Fuck the War” signs at Wal-Mart.

Monday marks the beginning of the Democratic National Convention in Denver and what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promises will be

“…the greenest, most sustainable, most successful political convention in history.”

Plans began a year ago for a green convention and will address all aspects of the event, from construction, travel, energy, waste recycling, sustainable materials, carbon footprint, and “decommissioning”; right down to the biodegradable balloons and a fleet of experimental cars powered with clean fuel made from Coors beer - and it’s all I can do to resist the obvious joke on that one - the DNCC is pulling out all the stops.

The Democratic Green Team

Andrea Robinson is the first-ever “Director of Greening” for the DNC. Ms. Robinson created the sustainability plan for the event is charged with overseeing what is hoped will be a “long-term legacy” of sustainability in Denver.

Jaime Nack, an environmental consultant and marketing strategist, joined the team last March and is charged with managing the day-to-day greening plan for the convention.

The May request asked caterers to make “every effort” to accomplish healthy goals and called for:

Three-colored meals selected from the following palette: red, green, yellow, purple and white.

No fried foods.Half of the plate should belong to fruits and vegetables.

The use of 70 percent organic or Colorado-grown ingredients.

Now, the Host Committee has issued a clarification called “Friction Fuels Frivolous Food Fight” to allay criticism and stop the spread of “misinformation.”

“We are hoping that everything we are doing for greening (the convention) has some legacy value,” said Parry Burnap, “greening” director for the host committee. The committee has launched plans for local river clean-ups, tree-planting and tree care events, and is sourcing its food from local and organic sources. Other programs aimed at leaving a legacy include (after the jump)…
