Brandon Darby, co-founder of Common Grounds, has publicly admitted to working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and being responsible for the arrest of two activists from Austin, Texas. On Monday he wrote an open letter in explanation of his actions, though the letter does not disclose many details.

In the letter, Darby defends his choice to work for the FBI, admitting that he was not approached by them, but that he actually took the initiative himself when he began disagreeing with his affinity group’s tactics and increased militancy. He wrote that the government is not out to silence dissent or take down activists, but that they merely intend to stop crimes from taking place.

Clear skies and Colorado’s strong, high-altitude sun provided an appropriate setting for a solar energy event at this week’s Democratic National Convention. Held in and around Coors Field in Denver, the event mixed two of my favorite things–renewable energy and politics–at one of my favorite places to be–a baseball park. Unfortunately, there was no baseball.

Outside the stadium was the normal smattering of solar demonstrations, booths, and vendors, Inside the stadium was a political rally of sorts; mixing music with speakers, including an impassioned talk given by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Other than the coastal states of California, Oregon, and Washington, western states like Colorado, Arizona, Montana, used to be unfriendly ground for the Democrats. But times have changed, in gubernatorial and senatorial races across the West, and the panelists at Thursday morning’s ‘Convention Conversation’ at the DNC in Denver were evidence of that very phenomenon.

The panel, bookended by the bolo-tied U.S. Senator from Colorado Ken Salazar and Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, along with Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano represent the new-look Democratic Party in the West.

They get patriot points for glitter, but MSNBC’s Chris Mathews took the cake with his kinetic hair sculpture. It reminds us all of the important part wind power can play in our renewable energy needs.

That’s not exactly what I had in mind for the focus of this post though. Protests are a great example of craftivism that easily tips the scale to activism. After all, you can’t buy “Fuck the War” signs at Wal-Mart.

Tornadoes send a reminder to Democrats in Denver.

With just about every report (even one from “W” himself) linking the increase in extreme weather (floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc) to global warming, it was quite a coincidence that four tornadoes touched down near Denver on Sunday. With the Democratic National Convention beginning there on Monday, it seemed like an attempt by Mother Nature to remind the Democrats to treat climate change with the attention it deserves when they finally take the White House in a few months.

Democrats Take On Challenge of Achieving a Green Convention

Having staffed a booth two years running at the Chicago Green Festival, I know what a challenge it is for meeting planners to stage a truly green convention. The Green Festival posts volunteers at the garbage cans, to help the public choose the right bin: compost, recycle, or trash. Exhibitors have to attend a conference call and sign a “leave no trace” agreement.

Now, it’s the DNC’s turn to wrestle with the inherent problems associated with inviting thousands of people to converge on a city for a giant party, while keeping their carbon footprints as low as possible. The Wall Street Journal’s front page story on “The Greenest Show on Earth” provides some insights into the problem:

After trying to source an organic, union made fanny pack to be given to volunteers, Bob DeMasse, the convention’s organizer reported that such a thing doesn’t exist.

The same goes for baseball caps: there are union caps and organic caps, but no cap with both requirements. (Come on, unions, step up!)

Andrea Robinson, the convention’s Director of Greening, is testing balloons to make sure they are really biodegradable — by burying them in steaming compost piles.

She has also hired an Official Carbon Advisor to measure the show’s carbon footprint so that it can be offset by investments in renewable energy.

“Lean and green” catering guidelines are calling for no fried food and 70% organic or local ingredients.

And, yes, the DNC will also have a team of garbage monitors.

Some inevitable compromises have resulted, but the Dems can at least be given credit for forcing everyone to think about the environmental impact of their meeting — and perhaps building a template for future meetings as well. It’s all part of an encouraging trend in the meeting planning business, which the Green Meeting Industry Council is helping to lead, and it’s creating ripples throughout the hospitality industry, evidenced by such organizations as the Green Hotels Association.
