Top 10 Modern, Eco-friendly, Printed Fabrics on Etsy

The task of finding modern, eco-friendly fabrics is daunting. Etsy is a fabulous resource of sprouting designers, but can be difficult to search. My original post on the Top 10 Modern, Eco-friendly Fabric Sources on Etsy was the top post on the Tiny Décor Blog in 2008 and continues to be in the top 3 posts so far in 2009. I have decided to again do all the research for you to create an updated list for 2009. There are some oldies, but goodies that remain on the list, but I have also found a few new gems.

Determining what is eco-friendly and what is not is often very subjective. At a minimum all the fabrics on this list are made of natural fibers with the least amount of conventional cotton as possible. Some of these fabrics are a linen/cotton blend that is more eco-friendly than a 100% conventional cotton fabric or a synthetic fabric. All of these fabrics are printed with non-toxic, water-based inks. Most of these fabrics are screen printed by hand by the designers themselves.

Along with boosting my personal care regiment with more hydrating products, I have another secret weapon for surviving colder days ahead. As a California girl, I never had to think of these things as it was not long ago that I strolled in flip flops on the Huntington Beach pier on Christmas Day in 70 degree weather watching surfers (with Santa hats) ride the waves. Now, a couple years later, I’m becoming all too familiar with some items that are essential for making it through colder days. One such item is knee highs. I never used to wear them but now they are a must. Fall is here which means weather, leaves are wardrobes are changing.

Heidi Klum’s Project Runway Eco Episode With Guest Judge Natalie Portman

“The Grass Is Always Greener” was the theme for last night’s Project Runway challenge in which the contestants were given eco-friendly fabrics to create their designs. Natalie Portman sat in as guest judge and it was obvious she doesn’t lie well. Not necessarily a bad thing, but her opinions of some of the designs were obvious by the look on her face (can’t say that I blame her, many of the looks we’re less than fashion-worthy). In the end Suede, who the mainstay judges (Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia) were weary about after last week’s challenge won them over with his tutu dress (pictured). This was not my favorite and perhaps he ran out of time, but why is it so baggy up top?

All in all, I commend them for featuring eco-friendly fabrics on the show and if you just can’t live without one of the designs, you can bid on it here.
