I’m still trying to put my finger on what works—and what doesn’t—in the social media arena. Especially when it comes to Twitter. This morning while following the increasingly far reaching peanut butter recall, I went to the FDA’s Peanut Butter Recall Searchable Database. I was overwhelmed. Too many links, too many products. Then I saw that the FDA had posted an FDA Recalls link for Twitter. (They must have just launched it; they only have 139 followers at this writing). Now, this is a great use for Twitter. What an easy way to inform interested people of important updates.

It reminds me that earlier this week, I had to postpone an EcoTuesday event because of ice and rain in DC. I Sent a tweet, which automatically updated to my Facebook page and next thing you know my network is almost completely covered. It seems to have worked, because I received at least one “good call” tweet.

So, important updates are one easy to identify use for Social Media. I suppose real breaking news also qualifies. Maybe also announcements with deadlines. What other easy to identify sure bets have you found?

(on a totally separate note, it is fascinating to see “who” FDARecalls is following: Barack Obama, womenshealth.gov, US House Updates, The White House, US Senate Votes, USAGov, Greenversations (EPA), Food Safety Info Ctr, NIH For Health, AIDSGov, CDC eHealth, CDCFlu and femainfocus (even their Twitter tag is confusing…).

Networking and word of mouth is often described as the best advertising money can’t buy. It’s also often described as the best advertising…period. Some entrepreneurs have found that their best advertising turns into another business.

Take Green Drinks, for example. Green Drinks is a social networking group that brings folks who enjoy a good adult beverage while talking about saving the planet together for a happy hour of sorts, except, with a theme. The evolution of Green Drinks, which now has chapters in over 40 countries, and almost a thousand cities, has brought it to the forefront of socializing and networking for the green community. Local organizers have begun to solicit donations from the community in exchange for being a ’sponsor’ of the event, and the items are then raffled off, giving promotion to the companies who donate as well as proceeds to the event. EcoTuesday, a growing social group that now has events in 7 cities, charges $10 if you RSVP, and $20 at the door if you don’t. It offers a simple format,

Calling all sustainability hounds: EcoTuesday, the sustainable business leaders networking forum, is launching its highly anticipated Ambassador Program. Through the program, people can produce EcoTuesday events in their city and generate income from event sponsorships. Ambassadors are responsible for organizing events, securing venues and speakers each month, and developing relationships with companies that want to sponsor EcoTuesday events.

EcoTuesday is currently held on the 4th Tuesday of every month in San Francisco, Marin/North Bay, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. The event features opportunities for sustainable business leaders to network and learn about green issues from visiting speakers. Don’t be shy about attending; participants come from areas as varied as real estate, organic food, and climate change policy, just to name a few.
