The GOP is no stranger to having a token VP - ahem…Dan Quayle! But with McCain having one foot in the grave, Palin’s political stance matters more than those prior.

The Republican Party wants to make oil the critical issue in the 2008 election. But the misdirected focus will be a fatal flaw for the Republicans if they stick to the “oil or nothing” strategy.

Representative Wayne T. Gilchrest, ousted last February by State Senator Andy Harris, confirmed he is jumping party lines in support of Democratic nominee Frank Kratovil. Considered to be somewhat of a liberal Republican, Gilchrest held the deep-red Maryland seat for an amazing nine terms. His district supported Bush’s relection by 60-percent.

I find myself both amused and completely horror-struck by the evangelical cult that resides within the GOP. They’re consistently bested by their faith, and to the point of absurdity. This is especially true with regards to the climate crisis. And quite frankly, I blame Jesus.

Before last Friday’s Republican-led sit-in morphed into a full blown press conference, there was no ‘real’ media to speak of. But ‘New Media’ is different. It can slip in, un-noticed, via mobile phone or Blackberry and slip out via 180 character-or-less Twitter updates or YouTube videos.

The Republicans and Democrats will not only be battling it out in the presidential elections this fall, but they are battling it out over who can hold the “greenest” (or is it the most greenwashed) national convention in late summer. From recycled fiber carpet to biodegradable plates, each political party is trying to outdo the other with its eco-friendly and “sustainable” conventions.

The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver, Colorado in August 2008. The party states:

The DNCC has a tremendous opportunity to educate the public and Convention attendees on making individual life choices that are environmentally sustainable. We intend to lead by example in this effort, with organizers applying green planning principles to every decision made in the lead-up to Convention week.

The Democrats will be offsetting the carbon created by the convention, using B20 biodiesel in all their generators, purchasing renewable energy certificates, using sustainable materials, and planning local river clean-ups and tree planting projects in the area.
