This a guest post and the first article in a four-part series about greenwashing written by Buzz Chandler, president and founder of Asean Corporation, manufacturers of the StalkMarket family of Earth friendly products. The purpose of the series is to help fellow ecopreneurs better understand greenwashing, how to avoid being mislabeled as a greenwasher and what to do when you are.

The word “green” is one of the most used and abused words in today’s marketing lexicon. The green movement is gaining enough momentum to make it a very attractive demographic for legitimate social entrepreneurs as well as bottom-feeding shysters whose true interest in green pertains mainly to the color of money. The good news is that there is a growing number of environmentally-minded consumers who put a lot of time and effort in to making sure they aren’t being duped by unscrupulous companies that claim to be something they are not.

These consumers work hard to evangelize companies and products that they deem legitimate. The community works just as hard to call out companies who aren’t backing up their claims, and the term they use to describe the actions of these companies is “greenwashing.”

The National Building Museum is featuring Green Community, an exhibit open through Oct. 25, that according to the museum’s Web site, “explores the origins of our precarious ecological situation and introduces communities large and small where citizens, political leaders, planning and design professionals, developers, and government agencies are working together for a more sustainable future.”

Recently I went to a meeting in the San Mateo County Council room for local residents interested in learning about how to green their homes. The meeting was part of a bi-monthly series called “A Taste and a Talk,” where San Mateo residents get together, eat, and talk about some green issue. This time is was “Ask an Expert: Saving Energy at Home,” featuring local green business owners and consultants.

Solar System Powers Donggwang Green Village on Semi-Tropical Jeju Island

Donggwang is on the western half of Jeju-do, the largest of South Korea’s semi-tropical southern islands. Near the village, Halla Mountain, a volcano and the tallest mountain in South Korea, rises from the island’s center amidst a patchwork of small farms.

Donggwang has achieved what even the most powerful countries in the world are still struggling to accomplish: total energy independence with clean technology.
