Greening Hollywood: Pacific Palisades And Vancouver’s Green Olympics

When challenged recently with the question of where to stay in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics, only one choice qualified as “comfortably green” - The Pacific Palisades Hotel on Robson Street.

The property’s yellow high-rise perches just a couple blocks off the beaten path but still nestled in downtown and close enough to walk to the Convention Center and other downtown Vancouver landmarks, says Lydia Miller, the property’s Director of Sales and Marketing.

The hotel recently reverted back to independent ownership after doing a stint as a Kimpton property. That was when it earned its Green Keys Award - a rating of 4 out of 5 - and as an independent boutique hotel, it offers many of the same services and amenities as four and five Diamond properties.

An Eco-Friendly Family Road Trip From Michigan to Las Vegas?

Is it possible for a family of five to take a road trip from Michigan to Las Vegas in at least a little bit of an eco-friendly way? I really don’t know. I’ve looked into some eco-friendly options but so far I’m not finding what we need or just not finding it in our price range.

Las Vegas has a few eco-hotels but they aren’t exactly kid friendly. I’m sure there will be other hotels along the way in other cities that are. We will be driving right through Denver, Colorado. I am sure they must have plenty of eco-options.

The foreword by Richard Hammond discusses how travel can still be responsible and what main elements a savvy traveler should take into account. Fodor’s also explains what criteria they use to rank each resort in different regions of the world.

A Boulder based company used the power of the press to make a big name for their company. Sustainable Cards, LLC has managed to get their name and their idea in front of the American public by donating 700,000 hotel keys to be used during the Denver Democratic convention.

Peo Akesson, founder and chairman of the 2 year old company ran across wooden hotel trees, used in Europe for well over a decade and founded his fledgling company with Greg Hartmann, Managing Director of HVS, the largest hotel consulting firm in the world.
Replacing non biodegradable plastic hotel keys and even ones made of recycled plastic with wooden keys is a bit of a no-brainer. Besides the environmental savings of 1300 tons annually that would be gained by switching to wooden cards, the long term cost to the hotel is pennies.
