<h4>The first time that I rode on San Francisco&#8217;s <a title="SFMTA" href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/home/sfmta.php" target="_self">Muni</a> it cost me a quarter, complete with a two hour unlimited transfer. Even as a clueless adolescent, I thought that was a pretty good deal. <a title="Mass transit ridership skyrockets" href="http://ecolocalizer.com/2009/03/13/public-transit-ridership-skyrockets/" target="_self">Mass transit ridership is skyrocketing</a> all over the country, as more and more people are utilizing more sustainable methods of transport and <a title="bikes" href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/bhome/homebikes.htm" target="_self">bicycles</a>. A few weeks ago, when I saw this notice that <strong><a title="Muni" href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mhome/home50.htm" target="_self">Muni</a> fares will be going up to two dollars on July 1st</strong>, the first thing that I thought was: &#8220;I actually feel pretty good about spending two bucks of my meager resources to ride the streetcar. I want to support my local transit agency and help it to be a success.&#8221; Man, I am getting old.</h4>

<h3><a title="Washingtom Post article on mass transit increase" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/08/AR2009030801960.html?referrer=facebook" target="_blank">More people than ever are now using mass transit in the United States</a>. Ridership on trains, buses, ferries and subways is at record levels, according to a survey just released by the <a title="APTA" href="http://www.apta.com/media/releases/090309_ridership.cfm" target="_blank">American Public Transportation Association</a>.  Their study reports that, <strong>&#8220;<em>despite falling gas prices and an economic recession, increasing numbers of Americans took 10.7 billion trips on public transportation in 2008, the highest level of ridership in 52 years and a modern ridership record</em>&#8220;</strong>, and a 4% increase from 2007.</h3>

<p>According to a new study conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, The average installed costs for photovoltaic cells (in real 2007 dollars) went down from $10.50-per-watt in 1998, to $7.60-per-watt in 2007.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s most amazing about this report is that it appears to validate a whole slew of state and local solar initiatives. The researchers found that—despite the <a href="http://cleantechnica.com/2009/01/19/solar-energy-breakthrough-could-cut-costs-by-more-than-50/" target="_blank">many</a>, <a href="http://planetsave.com/blog/2008/07/11/new-cost-effective-solar-energy-devices-from-mit/" target="_blank">many</a> reported <a href="http://cleantechnica.com/2008/09/23/suniva-introduces-low-cost-high-efficiency-solar-cells/" target="_blank">advances</a> to solar cell efficiency—most of the savings during this nine year period came from reductions to installation and external hardware costs.

<p><strong>Solar PV manufacturer <a title="oerlikon solar" href="http://www.oerlikon.com/solar/" target="_blank">Oerlikon Solar</a> has pioneered a <a title="thin film" href="http://www.businessgreen.com/business-green/news/2230520/oerlikon-boosts-capacity" target="_blank">new thin film solar technology process, which it claims has made its solar cells 7 per cent efficient - a 16 per cent energy improvement over its previous technology</a>. The advance has led to a 50 per cent increase in the capacity of its thin film solar fabrication plant.</strong></p>
<p>So, why is this important? Well, thin film cells are typically a lot cheaper to produce than more common silicon solar cells, but often suffer from significantly lower conversion efficiencies. Oerlikon&#8217;s breakthrough moves us a lot closer to the day when thin film becomes more cost-effective than silicon-based panels - which could mean a dramatic rise in the adoption of solar power in homes and businesses.</p>

<p><strong><a title="treehugger" href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/10/thirty-fold-increase-in-solar-power-possible-by-2016.php" target="_blank">The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) has outlined four easy steps to a thirty fold increase in the size of the US solar power industry</a> between 2009 and 2016, leading to over $230 billion worth of investment and the creation of 440,000 permanent jobs.</strong></p>
<p>The influential industry group laid out the plans at this week&#8217;s <strong><a title="spi" href="http://www.solarpowerconference.com/" target="_blank">Solar Power International</a></strong> conference in San Diego.  The <strong>four key recommendations</strong> to achieve this goal are as follows:</p>
<p><strong>1. Utility Ownership of Solar Power Projects</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;The utility and solar industries <strong>must collaborate</strong> to find program structures, such as utility ownership of distributed photovoltaics, that <strong>provide a winning scenario for both industries</strong>, as well as for customers at large. The solar industry can utilize this new market segment as a buffer until home and small business owners are back on more solid economic footing.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
