Eco-Crafty Events this Weekend: November 15th-16th

Have you checked out the indie craft show circuit lately? It has grown leaps and bounds in the past few years. There is definitely a trend toward eco-friendliness and charitable initiatives, but with a signature grass roots flair.

At the Giant Dwarf Make and Take Trunk Show on Saturday in Philadelphia, PA, Sue Eggen will be sewing her gorgeous hats from recycled materials. She is inviting attendees to customize their item, and will whip it up for them, right there on the spot. This is a fantastic way to not only demonstrate a craft, but let the consumer witness part of the fabrication process.

Get Green Indie Films, With or Without the Festival

Just when I finally signed up for Netflix, I find out about a great new film club of a different color (that’s green, of course): Earth Cinema Circle.

Dedicated to providing entertaining films (with an emphasis on the entertaining part) that raise social and environmental awareness, this isn’t your mother’s old book-of-the-month club. With ECC, members receive four films (short, full-length, and documentary films) on one DVD through the mail every other month. The films are yours to keep, or pass along to friends. All packaging is 100% recyclable, and the shipments are carbon neutral, thanks to contributions to The Conservation Fund’s Go Zero program.

And in the opposite corner… wearing art quilt shorts, weighing in at innumerable pounds of ceramic vases displayed on pedestals: The Fightin’ Fine Crafts Establishment!

Accessorize with Lawn Furniture

This is, admittedly, not my favorite time of year. Here in St. Louis, we get teased with a day or two of sunny, balmy weather, only to be blasted by some arctic front of snow, ice and bone chilling wind mere hours later.

I’m brought nearly to my wits end with the absence of green foliage, prominence of sniffles, and slim pickings at the farmers market. Certainly, I am in need of a little pick-me-up… a handmade remnant of summers past perhaps.

The Green Options Interview: Melissa Stajda of TheStanleyFamilyLodge.com

Started by two former Detroiters living in North Carolina, The Stanley Family Lodge is the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Jeremie and Melissa Stajda. Inspired by the abundance of wilderness around their new home, the duo was strongly influenced to change their lifestyle for the better.

“We both finally committed to practicing healthy and ethical habits through vegetarianism and veganism. We began recycling, limiting our consumption of new materials, and making a strong effort to be
