100 Elephants Killed Daily To Meet Illegal Ivory Demand, Chinese Appetite Whetted

Thanks to the controversial approval of a one-off ivory sale, illegal trade in ivory has been reinvigorated - and 100 elephants a day are being slaughtered.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) approved a one-off elephant ivory auction in 2008 of 119 tons (108 tonnes) - representing over 10,000 dead elephants - and this decision is believed to have stimulated the growing illegal ivory market.

Rehabilitated Amur Tiger Released in Russia’s Far East

A 14-month old endangered Amur tiger has been released into the Ussuriisky Nature Reserve.

After six months of care and rehabilitation, a critically endangered Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) has been returned to the wild in the Ussuriisky Nature Reserve.

The orphaned tiger was found in March, weak and emaciated at just 17 kg, when it showed up in the village of Avangard.

Exxon Oil and Gas Project to Face Russian Legal Challenge Over Endangered Whales

Russian environmental groups have today launched a legal challenge against a consortium led by U.S. oil and gas giant Exxon, for threatening critically endangered whales in the far east of the country.

Last year, Russian authorities gave Exxon the green light to build a pipeline across a lagoon on Sakhalin Island that is a crucial feeding ground for the world’s last surviving colony of Western Gray Whales.
