Evading Taxes Is “Unamerican” : Swiss Banks Come Clean

I.R.S. Commissioner Doug Shulman warned U.S. taxpayers hiding money overseas that it was time to come clean with Uncle Sam.

This is what was implied by the Obama-Biden Presidential Campaign. Too bad that many of President Obama’s team of advisers, initially touted for its wealth of experience and qualifications, have come under the radar for this very “unamerican” activity. Nancy Killefer nominated for chief performance officer, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and health czar-designee Tom Daschle are all examples.

In the Vice-Presidential debates, Jo Biden had also hinted that Americans with money abroad were “unamerican.” What he implied was not merely the fact that they had money abroad but that it was stored in undeclared bank accounts and that they did not pay tax on interest earnings.

Tax Credits Available in 2009

As was previously reported on Green Building Elements, Congress was contemplating how to include the continuation of energy efficiency tax credits in the “economic bailout.” Well, they did it, and even managed to increase some of the incentives.

VW Clean Diesels Get $1,300 Federal Tax Credit

It looks like the new line of clean diesels from VW, including the new Jetta TDI and SportWagen, will be eligible for a $1,300 Federal Income Tax Credit.

VW made the announcement earlier in the week after receiving notification from the IRS that clean diesels would meet the “Advanced Lean Burn” motor vehicle income tax credit.

Happy Tax Day! It actually came late this year, though some of us still may be working down to the wire. Get things done fast and simply by going completely "e" with your taxes this year.

The first thing you'll want to do is file electronically. You can do this in many different ways, but basically, you'll be taking the paper out of the process. Seventy-three million tax returns were filed electronically in 2006! That's what we call tree-happy taxes! Plus, there is a program available to some lower income families called Free File, which offers free e-filing.

Owe money? Ouch. Lessen the pain by not writing out a check - that just hurts. Instead, pay Uncle Sam electronically via credit card. You're paperless on those credit card statements anyway, right?

Getting money? Yeessss! Get a direct deposit and you'll not only save paper printing and mailing, but you'll get your money back almost a month sooner.

Oh, and don't forget about your phone credit, which you don't really need. Consider donating it to Refunds for Good.
