Located just outside Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem, the airport has made plans to install 50 kilowatts of solar energy in order to cleanly power the country’s largest international portal.

Israeli cleantechnology company ROTEC has developed a reverse osmosis system designed to remove salts from brackish groundwater. In other words, nowhere near the sea.

A pair of male vultures at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo who successfully reared two chicks together have split up and started new families with female vultures.

Ten years ago, two male Griffon vultures met and fell in love. They built a nest - as vultures do - but couldn’t produce an egg.

The situation prompted Israeli zoololgist Shmuel Yidov try an experiment: A newly-hatched vulture chick was carefully placed inside a swan’s egg shell and slipped into Dashik and Yehuda’s nest.

Have you noticed how all sorts of high end resorts and hotels have started converting their chlorine pools to salt water? And it’s not just the health and hospitality industry that wants to figure out a way to purify their water without resorting to chemicals. Other industries, including the food and beverage, dairy, aquaculture and municipal drinking water providers need to ensure that the water they use contain no micro-organisms or pathogens of any kind. A company based in Israel, Atlantium has developed what may be one of the first industrial-grade solutions to water micro-organism purification without chemicals.

As tensions ratchet over Iran and its pursuit of nuclear weapons and the ever-simmering conflict between Israel and Hamas, the World Bank recently released a report criticizing the water-sharing regime between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

In a region known for its deserts, water shortages and tension among neighbours, Jordan announced plans to build an eye-popping $10 billion desalination plant that would provide fresh water for the parched Jordanian population, as well as help replenish the shrinking Dead Sea. Due to up-stream irrigation removal and drinking water consumption from the Jordan River, the Dead Sea has seen its water levels drop by about a metre a year, and at current rates the Dead Sea will have disappeared in the next 50 odd years.

Tourist losses from people not being able to float in the Dead Sea notwithstanding, the Dead Sea forms an important link with humanity’s past, is a significant land form, as well as hosting a unique ecosystem. Saving the Dead Sea has therefore become an important regional initiative. Unfortunately, talks between Israel and Jordan to construct a “Red-Dead” canal linking the Dead Sea with the Red Sea have been fitful. The Red-Dead Canal has also not been without controversy, as environmental groups have raised concern with the dangers inherent to the Dead Sea’s coral life, its unique ecosystem, as well as potentially reducing the buoyancy of its water (to the consternation of multiple nearby resort operators).

The farm uses concentrating solar power to generate electricity and hot water. President Peres said at the launching ceremony, “It is a natural way to fight terror because the oil-producing countries of Iran and Venezuela destroy our lives by terror.” He also called solar power democratic because sunlight is available to everyone.

No government aid was required for the project. It was funded entirely by Israeli venture capitalists. The cost of the electricity generated is approximately 8 cents per kilowatt hour. This price is slightly less than the cost for electricity provided by the main power supplier in Israel, the Israeli Electric Corporation.

Researchers in Israel have discovered that Japanese sea corals engage in sex switching. Similar to species of trees and more famously, most species of reef fish, female Japanese sea corals (scientifically known as fungiid coral) switch their sex so that the majority are male. This seems to be due to male fungiid coral’s better ability to handle the stresses brought on by resource scarcity.

Since over a quarter of the world’s coral reefs have already become damaged due to increasing sea temperatures, understanding how fungiids are able to become primarily male may provide researchers with alternative reproduction strategies.

Kibbutz Reim, located in the western portion of Israel’s Negev desert, will soon rely entirely on energy derived from the sun for domestic consumption. According to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth’s YNet site, solar panels will be placed on the roofs of all 130 house in the community and produce electricity for the community. Excess energy will be sold to the Israel Electric Company.

In a region that is already fraught with tensions over religion, ethnicity, water and power, natural gas is a combustible addition to the mix.

Lebanon and Israel have fought several wars in the past, and 2006 saw the breakout of further hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia. This, coupled with the lack of a maritime delimitation agreement between Israel and Lebanon means that the northern end of this gas reserve will almost undoubtedly become a source of further tension between these two neighbours.

Engineers have created a new type of road capable of turning the vibration caused by cars into electricity.

The revolutionary new surface, created by engineers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, uses piezoelectric crystals embedded in the asphalt to generate up to 400 kilowatts of energy from a 1 kilometer stretch, enough to run eight electric cars.

Commenting on the innovation, a spokesman from the UK Environmental Transport Association said, “Many predict a massive shift to electric cars, and it may be the roads themselves that help provide some of the power needed.”

Innowattech, a green energy technology company in Israel, is developing energy-generators for three main transportation methods: railroads, roads, and airport runways. The concept uses piezoelectric generators — Innowattech’s specialty — to transform kinetic energy from passing planes, trains and automobiles into electricity. From Innowattech:

The system, based on a new breed of piezoelectric generators, harvests energy that ordinarily goes to waste and can be installed without changing the habitat.
