Avocent Helps Data Centers Save Energy and Cash

Earlier today, we wrote about The Green Grid, a consortium of tech companies aiming to create a “multi-year set of design guides proposed for use by data center operators and designers to build and operate energy efficient data centers.” There are a variety of products that can help operators green their data centers, and some of the best come from a Green Grid member called Avocent.

Verdiem Launch Free Software to Slash PC Power Use Up to 80 Percent

PC energy saving specialists Verdiem have today released free downloadable software designed to help users slash their energy use up to a massive 80 percent.

According to Allison Cornia, vice president of product management at Verdiem, “If we could get just 10 per cent of the world’s one billion PCs using [the product] properly we could save 32 billion kilograms of CO2 a year. That’s equivalent to taking half a million cars off the road.”

Sustainable IT: How To Fight The Power (Bills)

This week’s Sustainable IT newsletter by Ted Samson of InfoWorld departs from the regular format because Ted is home sick and his editors are “filling in.”  Although Ted’s regular newsletter is a great read, this week’s “collection of links centered around one topic: how to cut energy usage” are terrific in their own right.  Here they are:

A major tidal power developer has confirmed it is in the early planning stages of developing an off-grid data center in Northern Scotland to be powered exclusively by tidal energy.

Atlantis Resources Corporation and Morgan Stanley said they are in the early stages of planning a tidal power project located in Scotland’s Pentland Firth, reports BBC Scotland. Pentland Firth separates the Orkney Islands from the Scottish mainland, and has huge potential tidal energy resources.

Avocent Offers New Energy Solutions for IT Management

landesk

Earlier this week, Avocent, an IT operations management company, launched three new products that will make it incredibly easy for IT managers to keep track of their energy usage. The product that I find most interesting is the intelligent power distribution unit (iPDU), a device that works with Avocent’s existing DSView 3 Power Manager software. The iPDU lets IT managers know the exact amount of power being consumed by a device plugged into any given outlet.

Earth Hour: Tooth fairy delusion or one hour vigil?

Image source: http://timblair.net | Lights out for Sydney, Australia 2007

An http://greenprinteronline.com dispatch.

Earth Hour is tonight, March 29th from 8 to 9 pm. The idea is to turn off the lights as a symbolic gesture that us citizens, business owners, uber-corporations (hello, Google’s black screen, hello McDonalds in Toronto saving 10 000 kilowatt hours) local governments and non-profit groups are taking climate change seriously.

Despite gripes that Earth Hour falls on the NCAA basketball regional, it’s lights out for over 23 major cities worldwide like Toronto and Bangkok.

(Not So New) Markets for Green Businesses: Law, accounting and architecture firms

An http://greenprinteronline.com dispatch.
When asked: how “green” are you, the brains behind accounting, IT and architectural firms who, kudos to them – both the closet greens or eco-warriors who proudly bear their eco-badge on their sleeve – jump up to say that they are helping their clients drive sustainability solutions.

Even lawyers are realizing their impact on their environment. No seriously, lawyers are sharp enough to know that using all that virgin paper cannot be good to the environment.

But when it comes to driving internal sustainability initiatives? Many still respond by: “we recycle”. Period.
