Sealers wielding clubs for the purpose of killing seals attacked two journalists, one from the UK and one from South Africa, who were filming the brutal Namibian seal cull last week.

The journalists were then arrested and jailed at the Henties Bay Police Station in Namibia, and their camera and video was confiscated by authorities. The British and South Africa Embassies are demanding their immediate release.

According to a press release, “Even as interest in environmental issues skyrockets, the reporters who cover these topics are being laid off left and right.”

The claim that reporters who cover environmental news are being laid off in huge amounts does not ring true to me personally, even though I have no evidence. Currently the mainstream media, along with a multitude of sites across the internet, seem to be giving more attention to environmental and scientific issues than I can ever recall in the past.

Sometimes things get out of hand. And, usually, there is a group of people whose occupation it is to protect us from those situations. But as was the case on Monday night in Minnesota, the people who are supposed to protect us got a little bit out of hand themselves.

On Monday night, three colleagues of mine from the Kentucky Kernel were arrested while documenting the protests outside the Republican National Convention. Photographers Ed Matthews and Britney McIntosh, along with photo advisor Jim Winn were all arrested and charged with rioting. Matthews and McIntosh were both charged with felonies, while Winn was charged with a misdemeanor.

Would You Like to Read about Problems with Meeting Ethanol Mandates in California?

You may be thinking “Uh, Jeff, why are you asking? Just write about it!” Yeah, that’s how we’d normally do things here. I ask for a reason, though: we’re participating in an experiment in “community funded reporting” with Spot.us, a new journalism initiative in it’s very early stages.

Spot.us is the brainchild of David Cohn, aka DigiDave. The concept: “Spot Us’ is a nonprofit that allows an individual or group to take control of news in their community by sharing the cost (crowdfunding) to commission freelance journalists.” The project has been funded by a Knight Foundation “News Challenge” grant.

So, where do we come in? We’re going to be among the first publication venues to test the system out. We’ve agreed to ask for your support for an article by Wired.com staff writer Alexis Madrigal. The pitch:

California’s biofuels usage is expected to jump nearly 600 million gallons over the next couple of years, but the ethanol supply is already stretched to its limits. Almost all of California’s ethanol runs through a single terminal. If there were a disruption at that terminal — via accident or intent — the state’s gasoline infrastructure could grind to a halt. And even with that terminal, there are serious questions about whether the terminal could meet demand. (More details available at the Spot.us wiki)
