The first two sea lions were captured today in the joint Oregon and Washintgon sea lion killing program, with one being euthenized shortly after capture. The sea lions are being targeted because they eat salmon.

The animal was given a health exam when a veterenarian noticed a potentially contagious wound and decided to euthanize the it. Some captured animals may be placed in zoos or aquariums, but since very few such vacancies exist, many of the sea lions will be killed.

The Humane Society of the United States, with the declared support of two congressmen, is pushing a new bill that would outlaw the trade of primates across state lines. The action comes a day after a chimpanzee owner stabbed her pet as it attacked a woman in Connecticut.

Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) urged the passage of the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80). Twenty states already prohibit keeping primates as pets altogether.

A video has been flying around the Russian blogosphere of two people dumping about 20 dead and dying sheep onto the streets to oppose what the media have called an anti-government rally.

The sheep were dressed in blue T-shirts and hats reading “Solidarity” and most had their legs broken. The sheep that were still alive were vomiting blood and had syringes sticking out of their necks, clearly from being drugged.

The rally was being held by a variety of political parties who were joining together in opposition of the current government. While over 100 protesters involved in the rally were arrested, police were late to arrive at the scene of the sheep dumping and no one was apprehended.

Poachers killed an indigenous man on the remote Indian Andaman Islands after him and other members of his tribe, the Jarawa, requested that the poachers share their fish bounty with the tribe. The Andamans and their surrounding waters are protected but an increasing number of poachers have been fishing in the area.
