I’ve always found most body kits to be silly. Side skirts, fender flares, and front splitters usually do little more than add weight and make a slow car look like it’s trying too hard to go fast. But every now and then a good, clean body kit can improve the appearance of a car, and if done right, even improve its aerodynamic properties.

Hybrids seem to be especially popular to make body kits for recently, with both the Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion Hybrid receiving different takes on body enhancements. Toyota is taking the game a step further with its Aerius body kit which offers subtle improvements to the exterior without negatively affecting the drag coefficient.

A 3-month-old Canadian lynx kit was euthanized after apparently suffering a spinal cord injury at a Wisconsin wildlife exhibit.

Sadly, just a few days after an adorable debut at the Mackenzie Environmental Education Center (MEEC) in Poynette, WI, one of two Canadian lynx kits is now dead.

There seems to be a craze catching on with matching classic metal with modern, alternative power sources. I guess not everyone wants to drive a Smartcar or a Prius, but at the same time doesn’t want to pay for gas. That is the case of software engineer Raul Atkinson, who finally decided that since nobody made an electric car he would want to drive, he’d simply build one himself.

Of course, it couldn’t look like an electric car. We are all entitled to our opinions, but I still live in America, home of the muscle car, luxury SUVs, and a seemingly endless series of scenic roads. So Atkinson’s idea of dumping an electric powerplant into a Daytona kit car is not only appealing, but downright sexy…in an Earth-friendly way.

Editor’s note: This week, Adam at Life Goggles reviews a product aimed at “green newbies” in Great Britain: the Green Tomato Kit. This post was originally published on Wednesday, February 27, 2008.

The Green Tomato Kit has nothing to do with tomatoes. Well, sort of. Green Tomato has a simple idea that it’s easy to be kinder to the planet by doing things like not buying those tomatoes on a two for one offer, as you won’t eat them all. They’ve also set up a taxi service in London made up of Toyota Priuses (which, thanks to getting this kit has explained a mystery to me of seeing cars with funny looking apples on the side – they’re green tomatoes).

The Green Tomato Kit is a pack to help those thinking of going green do it a little easier. As regular readers my know, I get annoyed by the packaging of some of the eco stuff I review - it’s all well and good being made of recycled plastic but it’s wrapped in polystyrene. Well, the Green Tomato Kit came in biodegradable packaging made from potato starch and even the label with my address written on is biodegradable — made from corn starch by these guys.
