Endangered Sea Turtles Fight Back from the Brink of Extinction

Even though sea turtles are legally protected, their populations have been drastically dwindling worldwide. All marine turtle species are listed as endangered, except the Loggerhead, which is listed as threatened. Sea turtles face a number of deadly threats, including poaching, fishing, rapidly shrinking habitat, human encroachment, polluted oceans and global warming. However, in San Francisco, Nayarit the turtles are beginning to make a slow resurgence.

Solar Thermal:The Other Solar Energy

The European Union is investigating connecting a smart grid to solar thermal generators in Egypt and the Mediterranean. Mexico is also investigating solar thermal. Test plants have been built in Spain, California and Colorado.

Mexican Residents Stage Sit-In to Halt Destruction of Local Trees

Several dozen residents of San Francisco (also known as San Pancho) Mexico staged a spontaneous sit-in yesterday in the middle of their main thoroughfare to halt the destruction of hundreds of the city’s trees and the replacement of permeable paving stones with flood-causing impervious concrete. Local school children were joined by business owners and many other residents of the town who simply sat down in the middle of the road to stop the heavy machinery from destroying their street and [...]

First Jaguar Spotted in Central Mexico in 100 Years

jaguar in central mexico

Images of a jaguar were captured by a remote automatic camera set up in Central Mexico’s Sierra Nanchititla Natural Reserve.

The three photographs, plus some fecal samples, are the only evidence of the animal’s existence in the area for the last century. The big cat was photographed at just over 6,000 feet.

Lead researcher and study author, Octavio Monroy Vilchis remarked upon the importance of the discovery: “The photographs provide information about new recording sites, and allow us to deduce that the area where the animal was observed may be a corridor connecting jaguar populations.” Mr. Monroy Vilchis is a research fellow at the Universidad Autonomoa del Estado de Mexico.

Ethnic Cookbooks for Kids: Traveling the World, One Recipe at a Time

Teach your kids to cook ethnic food with their own cookbookI can’t say that I love to cook, but my daughter does.  When we gave her Honest Pretzels for her first cookbook, she did not put it down for days.  The possibilities of preparing food were very exciting to her, that’s why when I discovered another cookbook for kids that focuses on international cuisine, I knew my seven-year-old daughter would love it!

Handstand Kids doesn’t just offer a cookbook, but it is a kit.  Each cookbook introduces kids to one country and comes with a cooking accessory. The first book in the series focuses on Italy and comes with a chef’s hat and cookbook packed in a pizza box. The Mexican kit comes in a plastic tortilla bag along with an oven mitt, and has been named Toy Directory’s Top Toy of 2008.  The recipes are not vegetarian like Honest Pretzels; however, most of them can be adapted and they are all natural.  I can’t wait to try the Wedding Cookies and Mexican Hot Chocolate (can you tell I have a sweet tooth?). Personally, I would prefer the Mexican kit came in something other than a plastic bag.

Distributor Sued for Selling Illegal Cane Sugar Sweetened Mexican Pepsi

Illegal in US, Mexican Pepsi is sweetened with cane sugar

I don’t drink sodas primarily because they contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).  Apparently, I am not alone in my concern over HFCS, as cane sugar sweetened Pepsi and Coke from Mexico are desirable in the United States.  I’m not sure I would risk Montezuma’s revenge from Mexican water to drink a sugar cane sweetened soda from south of the border; however, the long term negative effects of HFCS may be far worse.  Unfortunately for natural soda lovers, Mexican Pepsi and Coke are illegal in the US.

PepsiCo has filed a lawsuit in federal court against Clayton Distributing Company in Georgia for violating trademark laws, committing fraud and engaging in deceptive, unfair trade practices by selling sugar cane sweetened, Mexican Pepsi in the United States.

Ad Blames Illegal Immigrants for Global Warming (Video)

Rather than recommending that Americans cut back on their excessive consumer lifestyle, an anti-immigration group has released an advertisement touting controversial research that has claimed immigrants’ carbon footprints quadruple in size after moving to the US.

The group, Californians for Population Stabilization, does not advocate that Americans themselves have fewer children, nor do they promote any other type of change to the American lifestyle. In fact, this is the first time they have mentioned global warming in any of their campaigns.

Study Warns Against Taking a Deep Breath in Mexico

Mexico may be planting green roofs, but that may not be enough. A new study came out on Monday saying that the dense smog over many parts of Mexico is shortening Mexicans’ lives by a whole two years.

Mexico City Plants Green Roofs

The proposed 500,000 square feet of green roofs are part of Mayor Marcelo Ebrard’s $5.5 billion Green Plan, which also plans to reduce traffic in the crowded city.

Greenpeace Mexico Scores Big with Green Sex Guide

Lizards making amoreAfter posting a green sex guide this past month to their website, Greenpeace Mexico has seen a notable rise in visitor traffic. Of the 95,000 hits they received last month, almost 9,000 were from people exclusively seeking out the sex guide. While 9,000 does not seem like a big number, the green love-making guide was the article that attracted the most interest on Greenpeace Mexico’s website. Could this be the beginning of a new focus for Greenpeace?

While their sex guide is currently no more than a list of 10 ways to have sex in ecologically friendly ways, perhaps Greenpeace Mexico and the larger organization should keep developing a more substantial resource. Perhaps they have found a strategy that could expand the number of people interested in their mission. Will mixing sex with hardcore conservation pay off (or should it be the opposite way around?)

While in all honesty some of the tips in the guide are a stretch (translation: lame), some of the more interesting green sex guide tips are as follows:
