Back in the early 90’s, Ted Turner created the world’s first animated eco-superhero Captain Planet to entertain viewers and increase younger kids’ awareness of environmental hazards. After a decade of hibernation, he is back to save the Earth from pollution, global warming and eco-villains.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers, an animated environmentalist television program, was considered to be “edutainment.” The series advocated the United Nations as an organization, and the concepts of globalism, multiculturalism and environmentalism.

The cartoon ran for 6 seasons and has been largely unavailable since then. Until now. Even more so than in 1990, the world really needs an eco-hero now, and Captain Planet is back.

The very first episode of Captain Planet and the Planeteers is now available on Mother Nature Network, and the environmental news network plans to unveil twenty episodes of the eco-cartoon over the next year.

Here’s a recap of the first episode:

The Mother Nature Network is looking to tap into some of that youthful energy by bringing on college interns whose passions run for the environment.

The soon to be launched environmental network is partnering with YouTube to hold video auditions to find one student from each major U.S. college to be a correspondent for Mother Nature Network in 2009. MNN’s college reporters will be highlighted contributors able to cover environmental topics in what many expect to be an exciting year for environmental causes once President-elect Obama takes office.
