Sir Edmund Hillary Passes On
Sir Edmund Hillary, the first to climb Mount Everest, died today. He was 88-years-old. Hillary was born in 1919 and grew up near Auckland, NZ. On May 29, 1953, Hillary, accompanied by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, reached the summit of Mt Everest. He only admitted to being the first atop the great mountain long after the death of his climbing partner Tenzing Norgay. On July 16, 1953, he was awarded knighthood for his achievement.
