Opel Unveils New Ampera – And it Looks Really Good

I wasn’t expecting to be impressed with the new Opel Ampera (the Chevy Volt’s European cousin). In fact, I was convinced I would find something dull, unimaginative and lacking in technical innovation.

But instead, I believe that I’ve actually found the only serious contender to replace the Audi A3 TDI that’s sitting on my driveway right now.

This week GM invited Gas 2.0 to witness the unveiling of the Opel Ampera, to go on sale in Europe in 2011.

376 MPG in 1973!

low_mpg_car.jpgWinner of a Shell sponsored contest and Guinness Book of World Records holder, this 1959 Opel got 376 MPG! At other contests sponsored by Shell, they achieved 49.73 MPG in 1939, 149.95 MPG in 1949 with a 1947 Studebaker, 244.35 MPG in 1968 with a 1959 Fiat 600, and 376.59 MPG in 1973 with this 1959 Opel.

376 MPG Car Finds New Home

Pumping gas. (Photo by Wikimedia Commons user Rama.)A standard car that got 376.59 mpg? In 1973? Where has it been hiding all these years?

Well, the record-breaking 1959 Opel T-1 wasn’t exactly tucked into a crate among millions of other crates in a giant warehouse a la “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (”We have top men working on it right now.” “Who?” “Top men.”)

But it did spend years, all but forgotten, at the Talladega, Alabama-based International Motorsports Hall of Fame until it was discovered — and purchased by — Evan McMullen, who owns Cosmopolitan Motors in Seattle.
