Finals are fast approaching on college campuses. It’s the time of the semester when students put themselves on “lockdown” to study for comprehensive exams, write papers, or finally tackle that half-page reading list.
Since I’ve been in college, I’ve noticed that most students adopt terrible lifestyle habits before and during finals. They don’t sleep, skip showers, and wear the same clothes (usually pajamas) several days in a row. But the most notorious bad habit I’ve noticed is horrifically unhealthy snacking. I’ve seen students walk into the library with a grocery sack of Cheetos, Twizzlers, Oreos, beef jerky and Red Bulls and devour the whole spread. I love junk food just as much as the next person, but that’s just gross.

Did you know that whole grain products, such as whole grain cereals and popcorn, are extremely healthy and not only for their high fiber content? These common breakfast and snack foods are rich in antioxidant substances, of which fruits and vegetables were generally considered to be our only really significant source until now. These antioxidants, called “polyphenols,” can also be found in wine, tea leaves, coffee, olive oil, walnuts, and chocolate. However, not to the same degree as in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These polyphenols may be the leading way to reduce risk of cancer and heart disease.

The new flick 500 Days of Summer, which generated much buzz as the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, rolls out in limited release today. Lot’s of people are talking about it as a romantic comedy meets Memento which in film terms means that those with ADD or short attention spans might be confused by this rambunctious romantic romp. But for us, the buzz doesn’t just lie in the zigzagging sex talk but rather in the architecture talk. Even more specifically in the Green architecture talk.
