Perhaps best known for its wetsuits, the water sports company Body Glove has partnered with Reef Check and surfline.com to help rally support for the protection of coral reefs.

The three organizations want you to sign a largely symbolic online pledge that serves as an “International Declaration of Reef Rights.” Body Glove is throwing in some prizes such as a wet suit as an additional incentive for us to take a few minutes to sign the pledge.

So, the commenting has begun in Red, Green and Blue’s and ReframeIt’s Green Economy Scavenger Hunt. Our own Tim Hurst has been quite active, but user Maximilian Harmon is definitely in the race, too, at this point (and, of course, Tim can’t win… that wouldn’t look right, would it?). Remember, $1000 dollars and a guest post at RG&B is up for grabs for the person who creates the best body of finds and comments related to the growth of the green economy, and the presidential candidates’ approaches to doing that.

Of course, “best” is a qualitative judgment, so we need to have reasonable, rational judges available to take a look at the web pages discovered, comments added, and discussions started. We’ve put that group together: the folks who will decide who wins the scavenger hunt on November 3rd are (drum roll, please):

Nick Aster, founder of Triplepundit, media architect of Treehugger, and staffer at Mother Jones.

Bobby Fishkin, CEO and Founder of ReframeIt

Jeff McIntire-Strasburg, co-founder of Green Options Media, founder and editor of sustainablog (OK, yeah, that’s me)

Of course, the campaign’s not over, and neither is the scavenger hunt: you simply need to sign up at ReframeIt, join the RG&B group, and start hunting for and posting information on the most promising innovations and ideas related to building a green economy, and Barack Obama’s and John McCain’s readiness to do just that (’cause we want to see them hit the ground running on these issues, also, on January 20th).

Really, I detest a contest where I know I don’t stand a chance of winning. This one has some really good odds. 14 winners? I’m one of them (yeah, that’s my mantra).

All you need to do is go on over to Etsy and vote for your favorite item(s) in the Handmade Kids Challenge. What could be greener than handmade crafts sold by their respective craftsmen online? There is a Handmade Kids Eco Friendly category with some great looking stuff.

Ah, science fairs, the rite of passage for middle schoolers everywhere. A perpetual procrastinator, even to this day, my late night project for my school’s science fair consisted of testing the hypothesis of which plant fiber made the best paper. Using various plant fibers from the field by my house, I created lumpy pieces of “paper” and tacked them to poster board.

I didn’t win.

But here is a chance to try and redeem myself:

Intructables along with Discover Magazine have teamed up to bring the Green Science Fair for a Better Planet contest. By testing out a “green” hypothesis you could win some great prizes. Enter an eco-friendly project, test and compare “green” products, repurpose old parts, or just show how to live a more greener life. Prizes range from a GPS system, hand-crank radio, MP3 players, and t-shirts, stickers and books.

So get crackin’! The deadline for entries is June 6.

Oh, and maybe leave the potato clock for another time.

Instructables.com is currently holding a ‘Go Green’ contest for green projects. The contest is being co-sponsored by Popular Science and Treehugger. Prizes include a hybrid commuter bicycle, subscriptions to Popular Science, and T-shirts (what contest doesn’t have T-shirts as prizes?). Full details and guidelines for the contest can be found at the Instructables site.

If you aren’t already familiar with it, Instructables is a website that offers step-by-step instructions on creating all kinds of DIY projects, ranging from relatively easy crafts to complicated robotics projects. While they are focusing on green projects for this current contest, they regularly have all manner of do-it-yourself projects. The site’s focus is on not just making things, but on showing other people how to make the cool things you have made, and how you did it.

There are many green projects on the Instructables site, beyond those that are already entries in the current ‘Go Green’ contest. Anything that you can create, and more importantly, that you can show someone else how to create, is a candidate for this contest:

"You can reuse vintage floppies, make your own cloth grocery bags, build some recycled modular shelving, a sun jar, a solar heater, or a wind generator. Move onto solar energy, worm compost, or even ditch your car for an electric bike!
Need more ideas? Check out TreeHugger’s great list of simple ways to Go Green, and the green coverage on PopSci.

"So, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, and rebuild, then show us what you are doing to make your life a little bit greener!"

The contest is open through August 19, 2007. If you have submitted an entry to the contest, be sure to let us know about it in the comments.

After the competition results are announced, we are planning to feature some of the most appealing finalists as part of our Weekly DIY series here on Green Options. The top prize winner is going to be featured in a brief write-up in Popular Science magazine. But we are going to offer our own Green Options highlights and a bit more coverage to some of the most intriguing projects we see, as well.
