Debco has recently released a version of the MoMA I Am Not A Paper Cup which they are calling the DA4299 COFFEE MUG and selling at an EQP of $9.73, which is nearly half the $18.08 cost of the MoMA model. Aside from the fact the DA4299 COFFEE MUG does not come in MoMA packaging and is not printed with the MoMA logo, there is nearly no difference in quality between these two models.

Some quick facts about Halloween for the Ecopreneurist from American Ad Bags.

Halloween is the 2nd largest retail shopping seasonal event in the United States. Consumers [in the United States] will spend over $6 billion during the Halloween season. Over 31 million kids [in the United States] will go door to door trick-or-treating.

Ok, first I want to say I think kids should take a step back on the amount of candy consumed during this holiday. Also that the consumption level in the US during holidays like Halloween - the food, the candy, the packaging, the party favors, and all the waste produced - is more than a little out of control. And last, yes the pillow sack is the best Halloween bag out there, they are reusable, strong, and readily available in most homes. Plus they hold a lot of candy so that is great for the kids, but does bring me back to the start of this paragraph.

With all that said this is an article about promotional items and ways Ecopreneurists can use promotional items to build their business. So from that angle I want to talk about the 10 x 5 x 13 Natural Kraft Pumpkin Shopper made from 100% recycled Post-Consumer Kraft paper from American Ad Bag.

For those Ecopreneurists working in the great outdoors Dri-Duck Work Wear and Performance apparel has launched a line of Endangered Species Wildlife organic cotton hats available from Bodek and Rhodes among other apparel distributors.

These caps are the one size fits all variety and come in four pre-embroidered endangered species styles in specialty colors. Chestnut Brown for the Eastern Cougar, Sawdust for the Grey Wolf, Ink for the Grizzly Bear, Fatigue for the Peregrine Falcon, and Stone for the Polar Bear.

All hats are 100% Certified Organic Cotton chino twill, with a structured finish, 6-panel design and adjustable Velcro strap closure. As you can see in these images the pre-embroidery is very highly detailed. (Please select thumbnail for Hi-Res image).

There is no mention on the Bodek and Rhodes site or the Dri-Duck site as to whether any of the purchase costs of these caps goes towards funding for wildlife restoration, etc. That would have been a nice touch.

These caps should be a slam dunk for businesses, hotels and gift shops catering to outdoor enthusiasts. Also for ecopreneurists in the travel and tourism business that are working to educate the public on these animals.

The pre-embroidered image really gives you a lot more design prowess than a standard cap, and with an EQP of $12.94 with up to 7,000 stitches of custom embroidery, the cost on this unit is very reasonable.

To learn more about these units Marc Seiler is the ASI contact to talk to at Bodek & Rhodes. If you are interested in these items to promote your own business contact your local promotional items vendor or email info@proformagreen.com for information and pricing.

John’s blogs are designed to keep us up to date on the “greening” of his industry.

Raining Rose - the first in the promotional items industry to offer a USDA certified organic promotional lip balm - is getting ready for the 4th of July celebrations in the US by releasing three new lip balm wraps ready for the addition of your company’s logo and contact information.

Many lip balms claim to be organic but the USDA certified organic promotional lip balm from Raining Rose is the only promotional lip balm I know of that is certified to put the USDA seal on their high quality product.

Why? Let’s look at the ingredients: organic palm oil, organic beeswax, organic extra virgin olive oil, organic essential oil of peppermint, organic hemp seed oil, organic essential oil of spearmint, vitamin E. That is it.

Raining Rose also offers a standard SPF 15 and SPF 30 lip balm which are 66% organic and come in a numbers of flavors such as Iced Pear, Cherry, Citrus, Coconut, Grape, and Lemonade. (FYI - Lemonade ingredients would be organic palm oil, beeswax, organic extra virgin olive oil, flavor or essential oil, organic hemp seed oil, vitamin E, rosemary extract.)

All Raining Rose products are made in the USA and made on location in their FDA audited facility. All products have their ingredients listed on the Raining Rose website (try that, Kraft Foods). All casings are made from 30% biodegradable plastic. And if you are ASI, PPAI or SAGE and want to test out their products just ask.

For ecopreneurists wanting a lip smacking summer marketing tool these customizable lip balms are a great idea. Clients really seem to appreciate their quality and Raining Rose can print labels with any artwork that you can design. Plus they offer a number of theme templates, like these 4th of July labels.

Ecopreneurists will find these products are great giveaways at trade shows, festivals, concert events, company picnics, beach events, you name it.

EQP on standard lip balms is $0.90 at 5,000 units. EQP on the USDA certified organic promotional lip balm is $1.90 also at 5,000. Minimum runs for each are as few as 250 units.

If you are in the promotions business contact Lisa Wagner at Raining Rose for more information on their products and special wraps for the 4th of July. If you are interested in these items to promote your own business contact your local promotional items vendor or email info@proformagreen.com for information and pricing.

This is a guest post by John Simonetta, owner of Proforma Simonetta Freelance, an eco-friendly promotional items consultancy (see proformagreen.com). John’s blogs are designed to keep us up to date on the “greening” of his industry.

Do you serve clients hot coffee in your waiting room? Do you sell a hot beverage product? Is your office trying to get away from Styrofoam cups?

There are a number of promotional item manufacturers working with corn based plastic cups for cool and cold liquids. As I have mentioned before I think these cups are a great idea as a replacement for plastic cups at ballgames, festivals and the like.

The argument is that large events create a lot of trash. Using corn based disposable cups reduces the impact of that waste because unlike petroleum based cups, these corn cups biodegrade in a managed composting facility in about 90 days.

So what about hot liquids? Tranter Graphics - one of the manufacturers of the clear corn cups - is now offering a solid disposable cup designed for hot liquids in 10oz, 12oz and 16oz models. I encourage all ecopreneurists that run a business using disposable cups to take a look at these items.

Why? Well let me use a statistic from Tranter Graphics to answer that. They point out that combined individual consumers in the United States use about 40 billion paper and 35 billion plastic and foam cold cups every year. 16 billion paper hot cups and 25 billion foam hot cups are also used in the United States every year. That is a lot of trash. We have to start fixing these somewhere.

Yes, simply not using disposable cups is ideal, however if disposable is going to be used, compostable cups have to be the way to go.

Tranter Graphic markets their cup under the name ecotainer™, with a little “e”. The units are BPI certified, the ecotainer™ received certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) on August 4, 2006. (The BPI is an independent organization that reviews and certifies products as meeting ASTM D6400 specifications for compostability.)

On April 21, 2009 Drinking With Benefits held their latest open house event at the State and Allen Lounge in downtown Dallas.

The goal of Drinking With Benefits is to “develop an awareness and call to action for local communities through businesses that implement the ideals of an eco-friendly community, thereby creating an active ‘go green’ network of lounges, bar and nightclubs”. Part of their education and advocacy outreach is recognition by Drinking With Benefits of those businesses who recycle their waste—in particular glass, which has the most connection to the patrons of these businesses.

As part of their program Drinking With Benefits needs to get their message out by identifying the bars that are members of their organization. Enter the Dakota Burl plaque from Norwood. This plaque is made entirely of sunflower husks and when laser etched really looks very elegant. Each new member of Drinking With Benefits is now presented with a Dakota Burl plaque to place in their establishment to show their participation in the program and to help promote it. That was part of the reason for the April 21st event.

Really, Debco has got to get some more exciting product names. That headline doesn’t really ring, does it? It would have been cooler to write, and the winner is Big Thunder. However, for our office, that would not have been accurate.

Yes I am talking about nonwoven bags. In the run up to Earth Day bag and water bottle orders seem to become the main topic for the promotional products industry. For our office the bag that we are selling the most of is the Debco NW4300. The reason seems to always come down to cost and imprint size.

The truth is that if you are an ecopreneurist branding nonwoven totes what you really want is the largest imprint area you can get on a solid and sturdy bag. In the nonwoven grocer category, where the Big Thunder and Debco NW4300 compete, the bags are made with their handles running the length of the bag for added support.

Some of mankind’s earliest artwork show one clay amphora with two straws in it, the act of drinking beer tied to the meaning of friendship. And who is man’s best friend? Why the dog, who also appears in most of mankind’s earliest artwork as well.

Regardless of what goes in the bowl, these new biodegradable pet bowls from QuickPoint are sure to be a hit with any Ecopreneurist focusing on goods for our four legged friends (cats too for that matter).

The bowls are one of QuickPoint’s Bio/Ad products, and are designed to “biodegrade naturally over a period of one to five years in a standard landfill environment”.

QuickPoint’s website states BIO/Ad products will last a lifetime under normal use with the biodegrading process only beginning when the products finally reachs the landfill, activating the biodegradable properties. In addition Bio/Ad™ products from QuickPoint are FDA approved, Proposition 65 compliant, and manufactured in the USA.

EQP on the bowl is $2.19 and QuickPoint does offer them inside of their next day production program for EQP $3.09.

When I asked Lakisha Higgins at Sweda Strategic Accounts for information on new green items for 2009 I was impressed by the list sent. I was even more impressed with the amount of colors and style used in the Sweda green line.

I have written before about how an easy first step for any business looking to go green in their operations is to just change to eco-friendly items in regards to things they use every day. In my opinion the top four items on that list are mugs, pens, post-its and notebooks/stationary.

We like events like Live Green in Plano because they give us a chance to take our eco-friendly marketing message out to the public.

Well the other day I got a call from Shirley Lee of Kanata Blankets based in British Columbia. The philosophy of Kanata Blankets is rooted in the traditional craft of blanket making and they serve both the retail and gifts markets in Canada and the USA. Established in 1993 Kanata is known for make exceptionally high quality promotional gifts.

Shirley asked what we were up to and when I mention the Live Green Expo she said she had something neat to show me. Apparently Shirley is a master of the understatement.

What I got was a sample of Kanata’s new blanket made from Repreve, a 100% recycled nylon material. Like the E.C.O fleece items from AshCity, this material feels amazing, like a cross between cotton and wool.

John’s blogs are designed to keep us up to date on the “greening” of his industry.

Have you heard of BamBams? Sports fans around the world love these best-selling noisemakers. When inflated and sealed, they are hit together for loud cheering fun. Add a bit of custom imprinting and you get a lasting promo item fans go nuts over.

Well Benn Chazan over at BamBams wrote me the other day to say that these very mainstream items are going green.

That’s right sports fans, picture waving, crazy crowds of pure adrenaline all going green at once and likely not even knowing about it.

Seriously, sport and concert crowds are huge. It is great when mass appeal products like the BamBams can be produced in a more eco-friendly manner.

From Benn’s email, “The Bio-Degradable BamBams are a green product when put in comparison to the standard product arrangement. In both cases, the product is made of LDPE (low density polyethylene) and thus, is recyclable [as a #4 plastic]. The difference is that the bio-degradable material is made with an additive in the plastic pellet mixture - approximately 1 : 100 ratio of additive : standard PE. This additive effectively weakens the PE’s structure enough that it can biodegrade over a relatively short time when disposed of … This biodegradable PE has an estimated time of about 18 months [assuming managed composting facility] until it has degraded to only water/carbon.”

Since normal BamBams might sit around for a few decades, I would say anything under a few years would be a great improvement. Ecopreneurist working with sports programs, universities, concerts and other large events need to really take a look at this product. What else is going to be green and fit your half crazed fan so well?

For more information take a look at the BamBams website (FYI not a lot there is eco-friendly). For pricing please email us at info@proformagreen.com

This is a guest post by John Simonetta, owner of Proforma Simonetta Freelance, an eco-friendly promotional items consultancy (see proformagreen.com). John’s blogs are designed to keep us up to date on the “greening” of his industry.

QuickPoint is adding a few more items to their corn plastic drinkware line. Basically QuickPoint is adding a bit of style as the first generation of these mugs were a little short in the design area.

The new mugs look more like traditional travel mugs however they are still made in the USA using US produced corn. This is a good selling point as the economy slows and - right or wrong - the demand for Made in America promotional products increase.

We like Made in America from the green point of view that these items simply have less to travel from product to client versus a mug run in China, etc.

The QuickPoint ECO-LOGIC MUG has a large 18 oz. capacity, is both biodegradable and microwave safe. There is also corn plastic information included on each mug stating that the mugs are made from 100% U.S. Corn Plastic (engraved on bottom) plus an additional removable “100% corn” decal.

The mugs come in Red, Blue, Cornsilk White, Maize Yellow, Ag Green, Translucent Blue and Translucent Green. The cost of these mugs is EQP $5.79 with one color imprint.

I like the idea of these items as giveaways for Ecopreneurists at the upcoming wave of Earth Day related events. I also think they work well for Ecopreneurists in the food and beverage industry.

Another item new for this year is the PITCHER with TUMBLER SET, which is just what it says it is, an imprinted pitcher and four unimprinted tumblers made from biodegradable plastic and produced in the USA.

These pitcher are sturdy enough to use for Ecopreneurist cafes and they are also great give-away items for events like company picnics as they are practical and also large enough to fill with other items like eco caps or t-shirts.

Raining Rose, Inc. was at the 2009 Dallas ASI show last week showing their line of 66% organic lip balms. They are USDA organic certified and I think these are great products for any Ecopreneurist looking for a different spin on giveaway items.

Raining Rose has a neat back story for aspiring Ecopreneurists. They began in 1996 as basically a family hobby with a basement kitchen workshop and are now a growing leader in their field producing all-natural products in an 18,200 square foot building in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

From rainingrose.com “The company’s original owners refined the products, creating pure, and often vegan formulas, of the highest quality ingredients. [Since] January of 2003 [Raining Rose] has focused their efforts on delivering quality products to their customer on time, incorporating the tried-and-true family recipes with luscious new creations.”

As we have written before about Independent Printing, they are a great resource for Forest Stewardship Council certified and recycled content print projects. All their inks are water-based and they are using wind power to run their plant.

The idea with the flash drive folder is it gives you a large surface area to print information that will be covered in much, much more detail on the flash drive.

A good example might be a piece for an eco-tourism resort. The printed folder has pictures and information, the flash drive holds film clips, music, a full presentation, a few .pdf brochures. Same idea for an energy saving invention that needs to have a lot of supporting data, or maybe information on an event or green trade show. You get the idea.

Here is the video.

As I said 2009 seems to be the year of new green ideas. The Eco Water Save Shower Timer, now available from All-in-One, is certainly a great one.

You place the twist-action 5-minute shower timer onto the side of the shower via a suction mount. The client goes into the shower and turns the hour glass (or is it 5 minute glass) over. When the sand runs out, shower should be over.

These little items help people save water, energy and money, by reminding folks to take shorter showers. They are also shatter-resistant and have a 70% recycled plastic body, so they count as a green item in their own right.

This is a very simple and very smart giveaway for any Ecopreneurist who works in the water or energy industries. I also think they would be great for city and community energy drives. Certainly a great Earth Day giveaway for all you Ecopreneurists taking place in Earth Day fairs, seminars and other events this year.

They might also be a good item for schools, spas, hotels and other venues that have users taking showers as a friendly reminder to save water.

With a EQP of $4.62 these items are a great way to get your message or brand in front of your client each and every day.

For more information on the Eco Water Save Shower Timer please visit the All-in-One website or email info@proformagreen.com

Here is a short story on the birth of a green promotional item and how a family-owned business became an Ecopreneurist in their own right.

Sublimation X, is the promotional product division of CL Activewear, an apparel manufacturer specializing in dye sublimation. (Sublimation is a technology which involves printing colors, logos and patterns directly into a cloth’s fiber.)

A family owned business and long time innovator in dye sublimation, CL Activewear started an effort to get away from strong chemical dyes and to develop products using earth-friendly materials and water-based dyes over 5 years ago. Their plant also began recycling all their waste material during this same period.

This is a guest post by John Simonetta, owner of an eco-friendly promotional items consultancy (see proformagreen.com). John’s blogs are designed to keep us up to date on the “greening” of his industry.

We wrote before about the Panda Stand from Megagraphix by way of DRYTAC. Well, the new, lighter, and less expensive Panda Stand L is now also available.

Like the classic Panda stand the Panda Stand L was developed to provide an earth-friendly alternative to a common display solution, the L shaped tension frame banner.

The frame of the Panda Stand L is 95% bamboo, with hooks and clasps made from steel. The banners themselves are available in eco-friendly material and can be printed with soy or vegetable based inks. Traditional banners can also be fitted to the Panda Stand L.

As the name implies, the stand is a simple L shaped tension frame that snaps together in a few minutes and breaks down quickly into a compact, lightweight, transportable unit. A cotton-cloth carrying bag is included with the stand.

At just seven pounds and with a visible graphic size of 78.70″ (200 cm) x 31.5″ (80 cm), these stands are great for Ecopreneurist on the go, providing high visibility at low cost in a easy to display and carry solution.

This makes them great for retail application, conventions and hospitality events. They also make good in-house signage for spas and resorts and other organizations with eco-friendly business models. Expect to pay $200 - $280 based on artwork, art reproduction and quantity ordered.

Please visit the Megagraphix and DRYTAC websites for more information on the Panda Stand L. You can also email us for addtional info and pricing at info@proformagreen.com.

As entrepreneurs we need to keep ourselves in front of our target audiences and often need to do this on not a huge budget.

On January 20 the United States will be swearing-in a new president, indeed perhaps our first green president as President Elect Obama has made many references to growing the green economy and ideas for a more green energy policy.

Well our friends at Americanna noted the references. They also noted that presidential memorabilia is a big deal and that it is even a bigger deal when the country feels that a history making change is at hand.

So Americanna is headed to the inauguration, well at least their World Famous RETREAD Jar Openers are headed to the inauguration. Proforma Simonetta Freelance will be handing out a few thousand of these shield shaped Inaugural World Famous RETREAD Jar Openers made from recycled tires to the millions of attendees currently pouring into Washington, D.C. for the event.
