H&M reports they will increase organic cotton use in their fashion collections by 50% in 2009.

Mainstream brands have embraced organic collections season after season over the past several years, but H&M is leading the way for their competitors this year as they commit to switching a large portion of their manufacturing processes toward organics. My hope is that H&M will stitch to 100% organic cotton for their collections, because this will not only give them a sustainable competitive advantage but also set the stage internationally for the complete switch to organic cotton textile production.

Green at the Golf Course? (Well of course yes, but I mean stuff)

This is a guest post by John Simonetta, owner of an eco-friendly promotional items consultancy (see proformagreen.com). John’s blogs are designed to keep us up to date on the “greening” of his industry.

Like our other vendors Norwood is coming out strong with numerous new green and eco-friendly products for 2009.

Norwood is one of the largest names in our industry and I am happy to see they are going green in a big way.

Take a look at this crazy use of recycled fabric that Norwood is now selling. Yes, that is a Wilson lightweight golf bag made from 100% recycled fabric. Norwood’s website boasts “eco-conscious golfers can feel confident with their game while helping the environment”.

I have to tell you that the closest I get to a golf course is the Nintendo WII with my nephews. Like many green thinkers I believe that a traditional golf course uses a bit too much land and way too much water, normally in places with little of both to spare.

These Heidi & Seek designs are adorable. Her dresses shown above are made from unused factory remnants, and reinvented vintage clothing, but they are reworked into new, creative, and comfortable styles.

The designer writes us sharing: “I’m a young mother who designs and sews edgy, one-off women’s clothing from reclaimed materials for my label, Heidi & Seek. I aim to raise awareness and provide an alternative to mass-produced, sweatshop made clothing that pollutes and damages the environment through the use of new resources. “ Her outfits are currently found on Etsy at http://heidiandseek.etsy.com.

Proving once again that eco-conscious fashion does not have to be frumpy or “earthy,” Callie Mick’s line of adorable aprons are hot couture, indeed. The Sadie and Lily aprons give full coverage so that you can spend less time doing laundry and more time indulging in your homemade kitchen creations, while the Julia apron provides the perfect size splatter shield from waist down in case you have a tendency (like I do) to bump up against the counter.

Aprons are available online and by email through www.calliemicks.com and range in price from $44 to $48 per apron. Also check out the adorable children’s line! Warm chocolate chip cookies aren’t the only reason little girls everywhere will want to mimic their mom’s in the kitchen.
