Looking for information on solar panels, organic vegetables, or endangered species? You go to one of your favorite green blogs, right? But if you’re looking for a film review, or a preview of an art exhibit, or information on pending education legislation, you head to a different blogosphere… unless it’s eco-focused, you won’t find those things on sustainablog or other environmentally-focused sites.

On Tuesday, the Sundance Channel quietly rolled out an effort to change that. Billed as “film, art, music, design and more as we see it - filtered through that space between the underground and the mainstream,” the new SUNfiltered blog provides an eclectic range of content… and, as with the company’s television programming, green is a part of the mix.

As a company with a sensitive finger on the cultural pulse, it’s no surprise that Sundance has made eco-consciousness a part of the new blog. Of course, you’d also expect them to hire a smart, savvy blogger with an eye for cutting-edge green developments to cover this beat, right?

You’d expect that. What you’ll get, however: me.

Robert Redford has come under fire from the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). In what seems like a bizarre veering off-mandate for a movie star and the civil rights group who once coordinated the Washington march led by Martin Luther King Jr, they’ve come to verbal blows over oil and gas drilling.

The Sundance Channel will launch a weekly block of environmental programming April 17, called THE GREEN.

THE GREEN will kick-off each block with their original documentary series, "Big Ideas for a Small Planet," which takes a look at things on "the leading edge of a new green world." The first few segments focus on alternative fuel, green building and eco-fashion. Each edition will be followed by a documentary film premiere (keeping to the green theme, of course).

To help inform their programming choices, Sundance Channel has created an advisory committee with quite a selection of notable names and organizations including: World Wildlife Fund, Apollo Alliance, Global Green (USA), TreeHugger, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Waterkeeper Alliance), Laurie David (StopGlobalWarming.org), and Majora Carter (Sustainable South Bronx).

The Sundance Channel, founded by Robert Redford (an offshoot of the Sundance Film Festival he also created) focuses on independent films, documentaries and original series. They've been producing and acquiring programming for THE GREEN over the past year.
