Glen Beck isn’t an ass, he’s a jerkass

glen-beck-waste-of-time.jpgI found this clip of Glen Beck bashing Live Earth over at Gristmill. I can’t STAND Glen Beck. What is wrong with CNN, why are they keeping this guy on the air? It’s not like he’s even pulling in big (or even good) numbers- his ratings suck. Who is this guy giving backalley backrubs to to keep his show on the air? Grist writer Adam Browning writes:

I’m not the first to note this, but it is really remarkable that CNN, a formerly respected former news network, stoops to this egregious low.

Mike Brune of the Rainforest Action Network does an admirable job of keeping his dignity, not committing any felonies no matter how justified, and calling him on his bull.

If, in the unlikely event that I am ever asked to do a similar interview, my only request will be that I be within smirk-smacking distance.

When the polar ice caps melt and seas rise 200 feet, at least we’ll have good wine

Glass of wineDoug Frost is a Master Wine Guy who writes for the Kansas City Star. He just wrote an article on how Global Warming is affecting (for the better) some German wine regions.

Global Warming has its upside
At a minimum, the altered weather patterns of global warming play havoc with agriculture.

Among winemakers it is accepted that the relatively predictable pattern of annual average temperatures in the world’s primary wine-producing regions has changed.

The last 10 vintages in Germany, for example, are warmer than in any decade on record. But how long have such records been kept? Germany’s detailed vintage descriptions go back to the mid-1300s.

Yet to the delight of some global warming naysayers, previously cool vineyard regions are finding that climate change can offer good news. Where once only two or three German vintages each decade saw ripe grapes, now nearly every vintage has been riper.

Busting some Truth all over Green Myths- the 70’s Ice Age Edition

I have spent most of my time during the first six months of life over at Green Options in the background of the blog. I went from posting 2-5 stories a day on my personal blog to being lucky to get in 3-4 a week at Green Options. My time was well spent though because it allowed me to focus on things like creating new series. The one that I’m most proud of is Green Myth Busting. It’s been one of the best performers over at GO and continues to put the reality smack-down bat on some old school eco-myths. Today’s version is a great one- Green Myth-Busting: 70’s Ice Age Prediction by Jason Leggett.

Myth: These same climate scientists predicted a coming ice age in the 70’s. They were wrong then, so why should we trust them now?

Fact: No, they didn’t. The situation in the 70’s was very different from our current situation. There was no scientific consensus on climate change. There was no international body of scientists looking into the matter, no global effort to deal with climate change, and no daily news articles on the subject. There were maybe a couple of magazine articles, a book, and some sporadic newspaper articles.

Today, by contrast, we have the IPCC, an organization of the world’s top climate scientists and its four reports, the latest of which claims with 90% certainty that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are primarily responsible for our current warming. We also have other scientific bodies that agree with this assessment, such as the National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Should one ask for a scientific paper from that time period that makes such a claim, one would certainly be left empty-handed. The most common example used is an article that was published in Newsweek in 1975, titled “The Cooling World”, which provides an excellent example of the sensationalist reporting that existed within some media reports.

Red, Green, and Blue: Carbon Dioxide Is Guilty as Charged

Last year, several major oil companies got together and produced two commercials that tried to convince Americans that the more CO2 we produce, the merrier. We breathe it out. Plants breathe it in. It's part of the circle of life. Just like that Elton John song! CO2 is our life-supporting friend, they said. We need as much of it as we can get. Thankfully, those ads were laughed off the air.

They did,
