Officials Intercept Four-Ton Shipment of Endangered Pangolin Scales

Vietnamese customs officials found approximately four tons of endangered pangolin scales smuggled into Hai Phong Port from Indonesia.

A suspicious waybill was behind the discovery of four tons of illegal pangolin scales in a container that was marked as dried seaweed. There were also two tons of tortoise shells in another container - supposedly containing dried tuna stomach.

On the same day that a loophole in endangered species trade law was closed, officers from the Metropolitan Police Wildlife Crime and Chinatown Units raided a TCM shop.

Approximately 200 products made from endangered tiger, leopard, and musk deer were seized from a “traditional Asian medicine” shop in London’s Chinatown area - a productive raid on the first day that an amended wildlife trade law came into effect.

The arguments that CITES ban must be lifted because it has failed needs to be addressed heads-on as it is a falsity used with clear intent of misinforming. The argument of raising tigers in the farms to re-populate in the wild, as of now, seems as facetious. Tiger-farms do great injustice to Traditional Chinese Medicine when they seek to justify their breeding of tigers for their parts for practice of TCM and the associated lifestyle.
