As the majority of writers on Eco Child’s Play are parents of young children, we often focus our posts to this age group; however, green parenting is not only for the young. What happens when our green children grow up and go to college? Maybe they will grow up to be an activist like Tim DeChristopher and block the sale of public land for oil and gas drilling.

Interior Department Cancels Leases for Oil & Gas Exploration Near Utah National Parks

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced today the department would cancel leases issued under the Bush administration allowing oil and gas drilling on more than 100,000 acres of Utah wild lands, much of it surrounding some of Utah’s most iconic treasures.

The sale of 77 leases on 103,000 acres near Canyonlands and Arches National parks, Dinosaur National Monument, and Nine Mile Canyon will be deemed invalid.

Utah Student Raises $45,000 to Protect Land from Drilling

Tim DeChristopher, the student who won over 22,000 acres of land at a Bureau of Land Management Auction, is on his way to purchasing the land, which was originally intended for sale to oil companies.

DeChristopher infiltrated a Bureau of Land Management auction on December 19th. Because the agency threw the auction together so hastily, he was able to get inside, grab an auction paddle and bid against the oil companies. He successfully raised the $45,000 by today in order to hold onto his claim.
