Sarah Palin on Climate Change: The Causes Don’t Matter

When asked about climate change at the vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin said, “I don’t want to argue about the causes. What I want to argue about is, how are we going to get there to positively affect the impacts?”

Generally speaking, if we don’t know what the cause of a given problem is, but we know there is indeed a problem, how do we devise a strategy capable of adequately addressing it? Or, in the words of Gov. Palin, “…how are we going to get there to positively affect the impact” (whatever that means).

In Thursday night’s much-ballyhooed vice-presidential debate, the issue of climate change received a bit of attention, but neither candidate was really pushed to develop their statements much beyond their original answers (Biden on his recent comment in a rope-line that the Obama-Biden ticket didn’t support clean coal and Palin on her waffling position on the causes of climate change). But the format didn’t really allow for deeper exploration either.

Vice-Presidential Debate: Palin vs. Biden On Global Warming

In the Vice Presidential debate earlier this evening, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden each had a strong point of view on global warming. Gwen Ifill, the moderator, specifically questioned Palin about her views on carbon emissions and Biden about his view on clean coal technology.

Here are some key excerpts from the debate:

Sarah Palin

She confirmed that John McCain wants to put a cap on carbon emissions.
She said that the nation had to become “energy independent,” conserving fuel and clean up the planet.
She talked of America’s cry for tapping into domestic energy sources, saying they support a “drill, baby, drill” attitude as a measure for becoming energy independent
She criticized Biden for an overheard comment he made on a rope line that appeared to contradict Barack Obama’s support of building clean coal plants.

Canadian Challenge: Canadian Election Debate, or American Vice-Presidential Debate?

Canadian political junkies are all busy programming their VCRs, Tivos, or getting all set up to Bittorrent tonight. Thanks to the vagaries of the Parliamentary process, there is a Canadian election called for October 14th. And, similar to the Presidential debates that have been, and will be happening, the leaders of Canada’s five major parties:

are participating in back to back French and English language debates (you can read coverage of the debates here). For those readers who are wondering, Canada is officially bilingual, and therefore the major party leaders have a debate in each official language prior to the election.

Energy Might Be the Explosive Topic of the Biden-Palin Debate

With the economy tanking, several wars being fought abroad, climate change producing devastating hurricanes, and strengthened calls for a sustainable economy, energy has become one of the strong links that binds all of these issues. In anticipation of tomorrow night’s vice-presidential debate, it’s probably a safe bet to put your money on energy as one of the topics that’s likely to fire up the discussion.

Wildlife Group Buys More Time for Pro-Wolf, Anti-Palin Ad

The Defenders of Wildlife, critical of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s record on the aerial killing of wolves, has expanded the viewing audience of its newest television ad.

The ad, first released for certain markets in Florida, Michigan and Ohio, will now be airing in Colorado, Virginia and Wisconsin. The AP reports that the wildlife group is also expanding the reach of the provocative ad so that it will air in Missouri in time for Thursday’s vice presidential debate in St. Louis.
