Last month, The Times said that two typical Google searches generate the same amount of carbon emissions that are generated by boiling a kettle, “about 15g of CO2.”  This week Zaproot focuses on this and other information in its stranger than truth show “That’s Just Weird.”

As much as you might think that living life online saves a vast amount of resources, the IT industry contributes to about 2% of carbon emissions (The Times). When it comes to companies like Google, the very fact that it generates more than 200m internet searches daily, provokes concern regarding electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Although Google claims to be committed to sustainability, the truth is that typing in a term into a Google search bar, offsets many competing servers to search for content related to that particular term. All too often the search is generated by the ‘fastest’ rather than the ‘most efficient’ server.

In watching this green news update from ZapRoot, I noticed they referenced our blog post entitled “my letter to my representatives protesting the consumer product safety improvement act”.

This is an important topic, and we are happy to see it in the news. One of the important points the ZapRoot news flash points out is that this act will create more terrible landfill waste, because places like the goodwill, and thrift stores, will not be able to sell their “untested” products. Handmade items are often created with reclaimed or recycled materials and have become creative ways too lesson the burden of landfill waste on our planet.  Hopefully once more of us tune into the issue, we will stop this extremist consumer protectionism.

$268 bottle of water, anyone? Going once… going twice….

Just as growth in the US bottled water market is finally dropping off, Greenland has made the bewildering move to bottle and export 1 to 3,000 year old water that it will drill from icebergs. To add insult to environmental injury, Greenland will market its product as “sustainable.” Just how much marketing sense went into the idea to bottle the climate-induced melt from Greenland’s glaciers in plastic and ship it with a heavy carbon footprint stamped firmly into each “sustainable” bottle is anyone’s guess.
